What Have I done?

Post by Ian Anderson »

Well that will teach me to play on the computer over the weekend

I just "won" a Ford 302 1971 block +20thou.

I'll collect it this weekend - and I suppose a FORD GT40 replica should have a FORD motor not a Morgan / Rover unit!

So now going down the route of building up a motor from it what do people suggest? Standard, stroker, internal balance, external balance 28oz, 50oz, what heads, pistons intake etc

At least this one will mean I don't have to worry about emissions!

Car will predominantly be used on the road with a bit of track time so I'm looking for some good manners in the up to 2000 rpm range which is where it lives in and around town.

Perhaps even manage to keep it to a single wire feeding power to distributor and go away with all the electrickery efi stuff! Perhaps even run mechanical fuel pump!

Well done Ian a proper motor for that pretty car of yours :D
as you have thrown down the gauntlet! for me, standard stroke crank internal ballanced, light weight flywheel, SFI 6 1/4 inch damper, Got to be Gurney westlake heads http://www.gurney-weslake.co.uk/ and here http://www.knightracingservices.co.uk/guernyweslake.htm :drool (not often I go all nostalgic!) 4x45 or 48 downdraught webers about 210 degrees of timing on the cam and rhoads lifters good forged flat top pistons standard crank and rods (unless you have the budget for a nice lightweight crank) stainless roller rockers, and if you have any spare cash a dry sump system.
Not the cheepest or most powerfull spec but absolutley right for a GT40 and it will still go like a scalded cat.
Best regards

Ok Mike and for the 3rd mortgage on the house?

Last set of geniuine GE heads was $25000 and they were bare and untested for cracks!
I believe the engine ended up costing in excess of £120k as things were not done properly the first time and it was all stripped and rebuilt again!

Looking mor on a budget the same a s a packet of fags!

Hold on the way the Government is increasing duties - let me have a look at he GE heads again!

Knight racing services do replicas from original drawings and pattrens, they ain't cheep but they are nothing like the money you are talking about, from what I remember more like 2.5 to 3K. Actually that is a lot of cylinder head for your money because their work is nice! they machined my block and did the platforms on my heads for big valve springs they are a top bunch.
If you are not so fussed on period authenticity then trick flow's twisted wedge series heads are meant to be very good http://www.trickflow.com/egnsearch.asp? ... toview=sku or if budget is getting tight Racing head services http://www.racingheadservice.com/Cylind ... fault.aspx high quality ally heads at a good price.

Ian I have the same engine, same year in my Maverick, and I'll probably be looking for the same (medium) state of tune as you when I re-build it! I would say look out for Mike but he's already shown his  side

Maybe we can get good discounts on x2 of some decent parts!

Dont forget you'll get as much power and more torque than your RV8 with about £300 spent on the Ford

I'd hope for about 100hp more
Currently the 3.9 gives 255hp at 6450rpm
But the extra torque - that will be a bigger number

Unfortuneately the extra weight is also a big number

And I've already been given a set of heads - but thay are iron ones not ali!

ian,

I think that if you go for alloy heads and inlet then the weight increase is approx 60lb, so not horrific, might need to go for slighly stiffer springs at the rear.

Are you going to build the engine yourself?

The block will probably need a rebore and line boring the mains would be sensible.

Roller cam would be a good idea with later standard ford parts bin and a performance cam

When you said a block, did you mean a bare block or a half engine?

Be nice to get a Ford V8 in the GT40, sounds like a lot of fun.

I last built a 351 w with 302 australian cleveland heads and rods, had crane hydraulic roller cam, fluidamper, milodon gear drive, msd, milodon road race sump. lots of bits. But that was before it became easy to get ford parts.
302 aus cleveland heads would be good for a boss style 302 but now it is cheaper to buy a set of alloy heads than work over the cast ones.

I havent seen a ford svo catalog for a while but they used to have all the goodies in them.

Engine is a bare block supposedly just machined to +20 and then the project stagnated for 2 years and decided to sell

First thing will be to have it crack tested - pointless putting money into something that is "iffy"

I had a quick look and Ford prices are not too scary on evilbay USA and all readily available.

I'd love to build a cleavor but I don't think the purse will go that far.

60lbs extra for steel heads - time for me to go on a diet and we'll get back to the same weight! (And I could do with losing 4 stone anyway)

Springs are an easy change on the car - about 10 mins per side

At the moment I'm just unsure which way to go - perhaps go the heavy route first and upgrade to ally down the road

Total cost expected to come in at £4000 plus so needs loads of thought
(That price includes a new cross over exhaust - Rover and Ford too different to be able to swap over and that will be £1300

How expensive can a couple of mouse clicks become?

If you put aside £1100 to 1200 for the cross over manifold, that leaves you with £2800 minimum for the build, that will build a very healthy 302 with ally heads if you already have the block, I would go for a decent set of alloy heads, they are just far simpler to work on if you want to match ports, a roller cam is a very nice idea, but may stretch the budget a bit though as you will need the link bar type tappets as it is a 302 block.

I build Ford V8 engines every day of the week, I have 13 here at the mo from stock rebuilds to wild strokers.

This is a 408 stroker ready for it's first fire up.

This was a mild 347 stroker.

And this is a fairly wild 347.

You really need to decide which heads your going with before the build starts. A typical alloy head (Edelbrock) will have 60cc chambers but an iron head although a 351 could have 58cc chambers more often than not have a 54 - 56cc chamber.

With an alloy head look for a maximum of 10.5:1 if it's a street engine and you want to run it on unleaded (premium would be my choice) and the mech fuel pump delivers 110gph which is plenty, even for that paticular 347.

I'd also recommend a custom ground camshaft (all i use now) the performance gains are immense but you will need a lot of info about the whole car it's going in, including your weight.

Hope this helps

Phil
