V8 r380 2wd 4wd bellhousings

Post by Gilestoutterrain »

Hi All
I've just joined this site as all my google searchs keep coming back here!!
So Hopefully someone may have the information i'm looking for!

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I'm currenlty rebuilding a Simmbugghini a rear engined off road racing car,
My problem lies with location of the engine with a landrover bell housing.

My question is could a rwd bellhousing and input shaft be fitted to a 4wd gearbox?

Where the engine is currently sitting the rear axle will hit the front pulley when it comes up on the bump stops, to move it back closer the front, the rear prop will be very long and the front very short!

If i were to have a 2wd bellhousing input shaft etc the engine and gearbox will be more in the middle making it all work better.

Any help will be great and if anyone one has one for sale all the better!

Many thanks

Rob

As I understand it, provided you use the flywheel & clutch from the 2WD setup, yes, it will all fit together.

As Chris said, if you use the flywheel and clutch as well then it will all fit. Depending on how much space you need there are other options as well as there are short 4wd bellhousing.

I don't know if this helps, I am pretty sure the 101 fc bellhousing is about the shortest one put behind a Rover V8, trouble is it had the horrible 4 speed box attached to it, might be possable to use it with a shortened 5 speed input shaft and an adaptor plate.

The 101FC used an LT95 transmission, which is different to the LT77 / R380. I don't believe the bellhousings to be interchangeable.

Hi

Many thanks for the input,

What other 4wd short bell housings are there? I thought the only short one apart from 101 was the lt77 defender box which they were diesel.
Although used to be able to get adaptor plates if i remember orrect is that what you mean?

I've raced with a Lt95 good strong gearbox just the jump between gears is to much for some sites!

Many thanks

If you can put up with the LT95, stick an overdrive box on it and use it to "split" 2nd/ 3rd and 3rd/ 4th I had that set up on my first RR and it worked quite well off road but too many leavers to use on the road, unless you get an electric operated one.

Hi as you will see i am new to this forum, but came across this question of
gearbox problem? not sure what it is that you have a problem with but if it`s a genuine simbug then you can get a rover v8 in the back r380 gearbox behind it, you will have a long rear prop but to stop whip you add a centre bearing, if you get it all positioned right you should beable to use a standard prop on front.
hope this helps pm me for more info, i have one. 8-)
