sometime dosnt engage just spins like crazy.

checked all the wires and the battary is fully charged.. also engine can be turned by hand.

what do you reckon? broken?

The later starters have a reduction gearbox and an overrun clutch. It sounds like one of those is knackered.

Had similar issues the other day. Turned out to be a bad earth so the starter wasn't getting full current. Stupid PO had just twisted two cables together and taped over them

Took 3 years before it became a problem (and I noticed). In the middle of replacing all the old wiring now.

To rule out any wiring isues just connect the battery directly to the starter useing jumper cables. Positive the the batery side of the solenoid, earth to the starter body, or close by. And then use a littl bit of wire to energise the solenoid direct from the battery. If it still gives you grief its deffinatly your starter.

The P38 Range Rovers. However you need to be careful as the solenoids could come side or bottom?. I think Range Rover ones are side, and car ones are bottom....

Hi ,

had a similar problem

fully charged battery, turned engine over to get oil pressure with plugs out, up after a long engine gearbox work. fitted the plugs starter would start to kick the engine round and then grind on the ring gear.

found that the battery was down on a cell and loosing power to start the engine over with plugs etc working.

new battery sorted my problem out

Sorted this at last, after taking the starter to bits many times checking all the various things..was a bad battery earth...(which i checked a few times?)

in the end i took the whole starter wiring off and started again ! :D
