head - exhaust thread stripped
hiya all,
yet more problems with my heads...
Just found that one of the exhaust bolt threads is stripped clean out.
the standard 3/8 unc bolt just goes straight in....no turning.
So looks like i either helicoil it or go next bolt size up.
So problem is.
can find a 3/8 unc helicoil but they are only 0.562ins (14.27mm) long
but the bolt is more like 1ins (25mm) long
Will this be enough to tighten the exhaust on with.
Anyone have exprience of this???
cheers
scott

Re: head - exhaust thread stripped
I had a similar problem with an inlet manifold bolt, it won't be a problem as long as the end of the bolt can go past the end of the helicoil.Seight-V8 wrote:hiya all,

You should do you self a big favour and buy a load of long 3/8th screws, cut the heads off them and use them as studs in the exhaust holes. Let each one bottom out and then nip it up with two nuts locked together. The result is no more dodgy screwing steel bolts in and out of ali threads!

now the serious answer has been made...sidecar wrote:Eliot wrote:helicoil it, then locktight a stud in there and then use brass nuts.
Brass nuts sound good, do you know where to get them from?
Cheers,
Pete
Just wait till a cold night and the balls are freezing off the brass monkeys
otherwise a boat shop generally has them to fit brassware on with.
