Crane hi-Rev Lifters.

Post by CastleMGBV8 »

Just for information really, I 've just ordered up a chrome moly push
rod kit AZ500 from real steel and as I.'m using the crane hi-rev lifters was informed that they have a different cup size to the standard Rover lifters.

The Crane are 5/32" Chevy size and the Rover ones are 3/16" so are 1/32" larger and won't seat in the lifters properly, annoying as I had to buy another half set of rod ends in the right size.

Tony,

I don't know if the Rhoads require a different ball size so be best to check, John at Real Steel is very helpful and checked out the Crane ones to be certain.

Which Crower cam are you going to use? I've fitted a Crower 50232 to the new 4.35 and look forward to how it performs. You probably know but Paul at V8 Tuner usually has some good deals on Crowers.

Just to make sure I understand properly- are the Crane followers the proper Rover ones and they still arent right or are you using ones from a Chevy or something?! Doesnt make sense for them not to fit when everyone advertises them for RV8 units!!

Yes they are the ones that Crane specify for the Rover engine Part No. 99284-16 but require a pushrod with a the lifter end of 5/32" to fit the lifter.

This would have caught me out if John at Real Steel hadn't told me. I shall be fitting them at the end of the week and if he's got it wrong there's going to be a lot od swearing!

Well... I am running the Rhoads on standard pushrods for two years now. Instructions and Real Steel never mensioned the use of a differend ball size on my pushrods.
Have the standard non adjustable original genuine SD1 pushrods cause I'm running shimmy plates.

If you have the Crane lifters you will still have the same problem, it's the size of the cup in the Crane lifter thats smaller than the rover one.

Could the ends of the pushrods be (tediously) polished down to fit? Or is the fit of the ball in the cup incredibly perfect?!

So, would they wobble or fall out? Seems a little strange to me. I was of the opinion that the whole industry just uses chevy lifters and people (traders) buy them in sackfulls.

Could you install your normal cups?

Boosted

Have not got and old set and they might not be compatable anyway, the extra cost of a set of correct size ball ends is only £24.00 and I just want to get the engine properly completed.

Just as an aside my engine builder used to grind cams for one of the well known cam grinders in the UK, apparently they used to state that they hand selected lifters to match and what actually happened was they picked them out of a bucket!

Topcat,

Wouldn't have thought it was worth the hassle even if you could polish them down perfectly round, Don't forget they are pretty hard.

Was meaning so I didnt have to buy adjustable pushrods! As HD rods are about £35 and adjustable ones are more like £140! They cant be as strong as the HD ones either...

It won't make any difference, any Rover type pushrods adjustable or fixed length will have the larger ball end so wont fit the Crane lifters properly.

How good are Crower hi rev ones from v8 tuner? To be honest I could probably get away with std ones but have decided to upgrade enough parts to get a good reliable 6k limit...
