flywheel decision

Post by Seight-V8 »

hiya all,

So my decision to runs the GEMS for my 4.6 westfield engine has hits its first major hurdle.

Having recieved my new 4.0 manual gems flywheel that takes the standard 10.5ins clutch cover and plate.

As i will be running the LT77 and 2WD bellhousing i can only run the 9.5ins clutch plate & cover.

So my new flywheel would require re-drilling. No so much of a problem as the next maybe.

The only real problem that worries me is, when the 9.5ins clutch plate is placed on the flywheel its overhanging the inside of the flywheel surface by aboout 3.3mm all the way round.

This means that the full clutch plate surface will not be in contact with the flywheel.

Working it out this means that 1% of the friction plate would not ne used.

Otherwise its a bespoke flywheel at a heffty £350.

Advise anyone? or just carry on?

cheers

scott

Tell me where did the mythe come from that you can't run a 10.5" clutch setup in a LT77 gearbox

I am running a Mc Leod 10.5" street/strip clutch cover and plate in a non modifiet 2wd SD1 LT77 for several years now. Only had to redrill my stock flywheel to accept the 10.5"cover and besides that it was an easy job.

It was a matter of taking the gearbox out.......refit the flywheel ( had a spare one redrilled ) fit the clutch setup and refit the gearbox to the engine.

Not shure if it matters : engine is a SD1 3,5.

hiya,

So the 10.5 clutch will fit but with the mcleod flywheel.

Anyone know the overall thickness of this flywheel from crank side to plate side.

As the GEMS one i have is 40.8mm and presuming if i run a 10.5 clutch with this it will not fit, due to the flywheel thickness.

As my old engine is not out yet i cannot tell the clearance that it would have.

cheers

While I'll had my stock-standard SD1 flywheel redrill'd to accept the larger cover I'll also had to remove the dowels which normaly locates the 9,5"cover. By Real Steel's advise it was not nessicairy to replace them.
Offcourse while it was weared by the 9,5"plate I'll also had to reface the flywheel. The whole lot was balaced after that to zero balance.
I'd payed 100 quit for the flywheel conversion ( redrilling- refacing- balancing) at the local machine shop in Holland.

But you can consider the lighter Mc Leod flywheel.
