Buick 350 . . .

Post by chodjinn »

Just found a cheap Buick 350 on ebay and got thinking, could you bolt 215 parts like heads, front cover, sump to one? Any issues with valve clearances, gearbox mounts? Might make quite a torquey motor, not quite upto Rossco's big block tho lol

Ollie,
SBB up 340 shares many parts with SBB 215/RV8.
From SBB350 cam lobes and valves arrangement are different to supply more space for rods.
Rover/340 : Ex/In/Ex/In/In/Ex/In/Ex
Buick 350 : Ex/In/In/Ex/Ex/In/In/Ex
In Holland someone installed an Buick 340 in SD1.

So I'd be better off with a 340 then as that would match the 215 heads. Shame really I kinda fancied a 5.7 litre RV8!!!!

Ok second thinking. Take a 350 Buick and compare the exhaust ports to the 215 buick - are they the same? Just wondered if my Janspeed twin turbo kit would bolt straight onto the 350?

If the port order is as above then the 350 will have a set of exhaust ports arranged like a SBC, two at either end of the head and two right next to each other in the middle. rather than the more even spacing of the rover.
You could probably adapt a chevy 350 header kit with a set of appropriate flanges if you cant find headers made for it.
The 350 is a more unusual engine, it's fun to be different  and 5.7 litres are always better than 3.5 especially with a couple of turbos on it.

Ollie,

As above you can mix and match Buick 215/300 and 340 parts. a 340 with a rebore can get you to 350ci anyway and if you use Buick 300 alloy heads you can get the weight down to reasonable levels. Jim Blackwood over on the British V8.org. site is doing this at the moment, to go into his wild supercharged B roadster.

Whats happened to the proposed rover twin turbo, I thought you were close to getting it together but see your selling the 4.6 bits.

Kevin,

I've seen the light with respect to Rovers, so to speak. Yes I have a 4.6 I was going to get top-hat liners, O-ringed heads and a full rebuild, but for what that would cost, its nearly at LS1 money. Definitely over SBC money anyway. Just seems a waste of money to me now. Gonna stick with the 3.9 twin turbo I have now in the MG to keep me entertained, as I have plans for a silly sized V8 with a single turbo at some point in the future. What car it will go in I'm not sure yet!

Will avoid the 350 buick then if its not really compatible.

thanks for the info guys

Hmm, $14k for a 1000bhp V6? Can't decide whether that's good or bad once you've factored delivery and duty.

And besides, its missing two cylinders!

Think you'll find that the 340 has a taller block and the intake manifold has to be wider. So 215 manifolds won't fit. Also, 340's are heavy monsters!
