Light Tapping Sound- TVR 4.5 litre Rover V8

Post by StreetDragster »

Hi All,

My first post to this forum, hopefully you can help me, i have a TVR Chimaera 450 with a 4.5 litre V8 rover engine.

There appears to be a very light tapping sound coming from the engine, most noticable when your driving along, decelerating, and then you dip the clutch (Exhaust quietens down and then you can hear it). Its noticable when idling when your ear is right up to the engine. Sounds metalic.

The car had a replacement camshaft, lifters, chain and pulley under 500 miles again (got a receipt, before i bought the car) so i'm wondering where you would recommend i look for the fault, or how to do it.

On the TVR forums they tell me that the exhaust manifold gaskets, and a fault pulley/tensioner can cause these type of sounds, so i'm going to check these first, but i'm thinking it may be something like rockers/pushrods. What do you think.

Given that i'm fairly handy with the tools, what sort of job is it to replace rockers/pushrods, and what sort of cost, do the heads have to come off etc?
Any recommended books for servicing/working on the RV8?

Thanks for any guidance

Matt

First check for exhaust leaks, then look at the rockers - the hardened steel pads that contact with the valves have been known to break down, even after very low miles.

Thanks to everyone that inputted to my thread. I tookt he car down to a specialists (Automeddon in Poulton-Le-Fylde) and Dave there assured me thats its nothing serious, just manifold gaskets/loose bolts.

So i'm going to get them tightened/changed

Thanks again

Matt
