does any one have any ideas why this may be happening?

the injectors have been refurbed recently and replaced and i am now running through all the checks to find out why the engine is running rich.

the oil breather pipe has been checked for blockage along with its filter. the potentiometer has also been checked for the correct voltage

You sure it's rich? Popping is usually over lean like when you have an air/vacuum leak. Could also be really badly out timing or the hot wire sensor isn't working properly. If you know for a fact it is rich though then I would be testing the injectors and the injection system.

Popping in exhaust or through intake?

Presuming it is a Hotwire and 4CUX brain/ecu

Reset the ecu bu disconnecting the battery for at least 30 seconds and then reconnecting

Will clear down error codes and if it is on limp home mode will clear the over fueling
