sbc flywheel opinions...

I've been looking for a flywheel to fit my 350, and came across this eBay item and they are willing to ship to the UK. What do you all think??

Yes looks OK, 153 tooth flywheel puts slightly more load on the starter motor, but I think you should be OK on that front if you use a geared starter, you are not using overly high compression or silly valve springs.

Surely it will need the same amount of teeth his existing flywheel has in order to mesh correctly ?

And why does the advert say "Will not work on stock style spring clutches" ?

Hi
there are two "standard" SBC flywheel sizes (as I have posted elsewhere) 168 and 153 tooth versions, the starer is fitted with mounting holes that allows it to be used with either. The 168 tooth flywheel is used with the stock chevy non diaphragm (spring and finger) clutch normally seen on trucks. These are too big to fit on the 153 tooth flywheel (they are also pointlessly heavy) just buy an aftermarket clutch for a 153 tooth flywheel.

Am watching with some interest- as planning my own chevy build - which are the more easily available in terms of heavy duty clutches etc??
Spent so much on trial and error!

Hi Dave
no idea about clutch costs mate I have a torque converter and a 'Glide. I know about the flywheels because flexplates come in the two sizes and the 4 bolt truck motors come with 168 flywheels or flexplates, generally passenger cars have 2 bolt motors come with 153s and you can't fit a 168 truck clutch onto a 153. However the aftermarket caters for both.

Depends what's going on the other end too. I had to use the 168 when bolting the getrag to my LS as that was the only realistic clutch option, and it would be the same solution if it was an sbc.

That is why I keep suggesting a flexplate, button flywheel and a 3 plate 7 1/4 inch tilton clutch with a concentric slave cylinder second hand off a Nascar team on ebay. You can fit it under pretty well any bell housing and getting friction plates with the right splines is simple.
