Rover V8 46D crank pulley clearance issue?
I have at last got a serpentine crank pulley for my Rover V8.
I have the intermediate cover as most of us do.
Why, why, why! does the water pump housing (the bit that connects to the rubber pipe) prevent me from installing the pulley! Now I need to remove change the change the gasket, clean off the hylomar, tap out the loctite 243. Assuming that once I have installed the crank pulley the water pump will fit!
Anyway theres's a chunk of ali that is part of the timing cover on the right hand side, no sure what that is for, stop the belt comming off, but anyway will this also represent a clearance issue? The pulley I have does not have a damper attached but the pulley is quite heavy is it also the damper?
I am in no rush to install yet, I just wanted to check my pulley belt alignment. I need to attach a timing wheel which will take a while to sort out.

Pictures!
I think the bit of ally you're reffering to is the tdc pointer for doing the timing, the timing marks are on the damper.
I'd don't know why you're getting clearance issues with the water pump, it should all fit together ifs all proper serp bits intended for the same engine (3.9).
The damper should look the same as any other v8 damper, the pulley attaches to it. You might have a tvr pulley which i've seen around which looks like a standard damper with the multi vee belt grooves machined into the outer surface. If thats the one you have then you may have the wrong one.
This is the only picci i can find of the proper one, its an ebay listing that has now finished so you'll need to sign in to see it.

The spacer should be to fit a short nose crank pulley (sd1 etc) to a long nose crank. The pulley would go on first and then the spacer and then the bolt. Have you put the spacer on first then?
The pulley is unusual, i'm guessing a later 4.6/4.0 gems one.
Heres some more pics of an interim cover and relevant pulley from Eliots website. They're from a tvr 5.0 griff engine i think but are the same as the interim 3.9 serp engines.

Nope, I got fed up with the poor service, ordered from a place I have not orderd before, dispatch same day receive next, free delivery and a lot cheaper:
http://www.lrdirect.com/
However this cost me £86 because it is an all in one balanaced damper and pulley.

Adam,
I don't understand why you have a problem. What your pictures shows is definately a 4.0/4.6 serp damper/pulley assembly. If you have a long nose crank and serp cover (with concentric oil pump) then it should all go together with no issues. You don't need a spacer - that is only required, fitted onto the crank before the pulley, when you don't have the crank oil pump to take up the space where it fits OR to take up the extra crank nose length that sticks through the pulley if you use a non-serp cover with a long nose crank.
You have something amiss somewhere in your combination of parts???

I hope I have got it wrong then I do not have to send back the pulley. Basically it is is 4.6V8 Gems engine which will be definition have the long crank nose and long keyway. I have the intermediate timing cover which has the cresent oil pump driven by the keyway. I see that the pulley has a slot to engage with the woodruff key but the pulley will not engage with the key because the water pump prevents the pulley being pushed all the way home but in anycase if I could push all the way home it would not lign up with the water pump or alternator pulleys. If I insert the spacer first it seems to then align but then I do not have a positive engagement of the crank pulley and it actually only engages the nose of the crank by about 10mm, as can be seen from the third photo, the crank bolt will not reach with the thick washer. I am confused?
I will go into the garage and have another look at it.

I have no idea about this so I am just throwing ideas in the air. Are the inter and 4.6 front covers/pumps the same or is the inter longer to accommodate the dizzy? By looking at the pics it looks to me like the inter damper is smaller in diameter so it will fit under the pump. The extension pulley then bolts on to the damper and spaces out to match the water pump. Dosnt matter that it is larger diameter as it will be in front of the pump as per pump pulley.
Any of that make any sense?

The gem serpentine cover is narrower at the top as not dizzy drive is required. but the bottom of the gem cover is wider as the oil pickup routes to the front of the cover internally and hence longer sump also and why the crank nose is longer (well one reason). As far as I know and this is new terrority for me the crank spacer takes up the space on the crank nose between the dish of the pulley and the thick washer under the bolt.
I have been in the garage tonight and cannot make it work and diffiantly wrong pulley I think.

Erm! still not sorted as I do not know for definite the part numbers. I have described what I want to the supplier and I started to chase him but he said he is not happy with that and is insisting for part numbers.

I have bought one of the damper assy's from JE and its a good looking bit of kit and correct for mine and i'm guessing your applications.
