yes that sounds like a plan, but I would plug the stub on the plenum or the idle will be too high and the ECU will be confused by the extra air.

A sight glass on the side is very usefull, inlet tube that extends to about halfway down the tank and a one way valve in the outlet so as it all cools the breather system can't draw cold damp air directly back into into the tank (and it makes it more difficult for the engine to pull the contents of the tank back into the engine).
Best regards

did your test today mike,
took the breather off and i was surprised how much fumes were venting out,
ran her up the road under load with no oil breathers conected to the plenum, and yup on overun still smoke

looking more and more like a ring fault now aint it
thing is goes like a ferkin rocket and dont smoke when hot or cold on startup.

or could it still be a bedding in fault?

Tony, A couple of weeks ago, although you said you couldn't do the leak-down test, its been mentioned variously since.

If you have not gotton round to it yet, its got to be the next step, surely?

I'm sure I read somewhere that its possible for a cylinder to register good compression test results, but fail on leak-down.

yeah i must get round to doing this,
but bit hard with the christmas period,
not allowed into the garage to tinker,

did get an email from someone saying they had a similar thing,
they was using 15/40 oil and when they changed to 20/50 it stopped, :?
could that happen?

Hi Tony
Just shows what I know, :? I was convinced it was the breather system  . what oil did you run it in on in the end? If the oil was too good then you can get rings that will not bed in or if you don't load it up atall during run in. I still think though the cam run in period should have bedded in the rings. Admitadly my Laverda did not bed in it's rings properly until the first time I did an acceleration test, but then bedded them in in about 300 yards (though after long storage it can be a bit smoaky until you give it a blat). I am presuming you have given it some hard throttle use by now :D .
One last thought, have you a build up of oil in the plenum now? though I must admit I am grasping at straws here.
On an otherwise good condition engine (ie new ish)I always thought oil smoke on over run was inlet valve guides, at high revs but not low was pistons too small for the bores (ie pistons rocking in the bores) and under load non bedded rings.
Best regards
Mike

I think there lies the origin of this issue. The cam break in didn't go like it had to go. Tony's Capri suffered from startup problems in the first weeks before the engine would run properly, so the engine had run several times but not the required 2000+ rpm for 20 minuts after the first initial start.

I was always learned whatever happend, make shure the engine runs inmidiatly 2500rpm for 20 minuts after its first startup. It is even stated in the manuals thats suplied with rebuild or carte engines.

So I think you have a ring bed-in failure.
