Kev!!
63???
I look older than you do :(

My oldest (27 and out of work apart from odd jobs for a few months here and there over the last 3 years) has just anounced that she has a good job offer in the pipeline which she is hoping will be a goer. You will never guess where it is???
The local bloody jobcentre

Apparently they need more staff to help out with the large influx of applicants. Fingers crossed.

PS
How come I look older than you :?:

Perry,

Mark mgbloke is interested in the Retro day so have sent him the info.

Can't wait for the weather to improve so I can get some miles on the new engine and get the timing and carb dialled in.

I have to be honest, I don't seem to have been affected by it too much.
I'm a uni student (final year) and they only give you £4.5k to live on anyway. I've been used to living on £50 a week for the last 3 1/2 years.

I managed to scrape together £1500 in November and buy my current BGT. So that wasn't too bad.

The student loans corporation dole out monies every 3 months. When "pay day" roles around, I pay up 3 months rent along with 3 months untilities. I then just have to worry about food and petrol. £30 goes in the tank each week and £20 ends up in the fridge.
I'm hoping to sell off my Volvo 850 soon which should help start to pay off the overdraft.

What I'm most worried about is finding a job when my degree finishes. To be honest, I've totally lost interest in academic work. Infact, I'm seriously considering saving up to take my Artic Lorry licence (C+E I think?)
Apparently there's a shortage of HGV drivers in this country.
Not sure if it'll work out, but I'm going to give it a go. If it doesn't work out, I can always try something else.

To be honest, as long as I can earn enough to pay the bills and still have a little bit left over at the end of each month so I can play with my BGT I'll be happy.

-JC

p.s if anyone is after a cheap, reliable and reasonably economical family car, Give me a shout. I've got a cracking '93 Volvo 850 GLT in red with half leather and the engine you really want; 2.0 litre 20 valve that needs a new owner!

I once looked into driving and the cheapest way to get a licence was to sign up at your local bus company

They give you the vehicle, training bloke - pay for the test etc and then when you don't like the job you leave and still have the licence!

I don't think the money is as good as it used to be for truckers. I think there are regs on how many hours per week you can put in, i'm sure there's good money to be made doing runs into europe but the issue of illeagal immigrants stowing away on vehicles is a serious problem.

From the research I've done it'll be about £1250 per licence, or a bit less if I book a "double course".
Thing is though, if it sets me up for a job for life it's not exactly a shed load of money.
There will always be a need for stuff to be moved around. Heck, you can look at almost everything in the average house and at some point it'll have been on the back of a truck.

The various training companys I've spoken to say £25k pa for class 2 or up to £33k for class 1. A trucker friend from the MGOC reccons this is about right.

It's early days yet, anyway. The idea of driving an artic really appeals to me. I don't know if I want to do it for the rest of my working life, though.

No! But its a fantastic investment for a young person. My wife had the foresight to spend the proceeds of an 18 year endowment insurance policy in putting my son thro' his full HGV licence as soon as he reached the qualifying age.

That was over 20 years ago and he has done it all - whenever he chose too.

# Day after day driving Supermarket trunkers up and down UK highways.

# Delivering new cars on transporters.

# Moving F1 Hospitality vehicles between the F1 European race venues every two weeks thro' the summer GP season.

# Filling in for agencies caught short at the last minute.

At no time has he ever considered it to be a full time job - just a way of making money quickly when needed. And his current career?

Driving HGV's was one of the ways he and his wife were able to fund the venture.

I'l agree- it is expensive and tough but a very good investment as like Ramon said you have it for life (if you keep up with your medicals) and you can always jump in the cab and earn some money- and if another job goes tits up you can fall back on driving again!
