
Making a front splitter from scratch.

Good evening Gentlemen,
Tom that splitter makes the car look like one of the characters from Transformers!
Lots of work gone into that for sure.
Mr Mole you are so right,top pic uninspiring, the bottom much more like it,you could do something like that I'm sure.
Have been working away out there tonight and things are looking okay so far.
I did want to show a pic of how the template was released but bugger me backwards,three taps with a soft faced sledgehammer
and the thing fell off, literally.
As it fell it did leave three small sections behind but these came off easily as well and were bonded back into place with a smear of plop.
I have spent some time with the sanding paper wrapped around the waste tube and have got a really nice profile already and as I have sanded the paper has just about self calculated were the edge of the splitter should be.
How cool is that.(More luck than judgement though)
Now all I have to do is to make the whole thing smooth and cut to shape and then I can start prepping for the mould.
Anyway enough rambling here are the pics....


This frontal area needs a little bit of tidying to make it square.


Just a quick question..does anyone want to see how the mould is made?
I don't want to hog the space and I really dont want people to think I'm stroking my own ego with this thread.If you want pics then fine ,if you dont then thats fine too.

I'd like to see the mould being made too
have u though of wear or damage to the front of the splitter, a while back i had a conversation with mark about his on his pop and he went for a sheet of thick plastic secured underneath, might save on redoing it after a parking incident

I will try to show as much detail as poss whilst making the mould and the final panel and if anyone has any questions then please ask even if you think it's a dumb question ok.I promise I wont take the wee (well ,not much anyway )
JSF, I allegedly, am a professional grp repairman so am not to worried about a little road rash as I can fix it fairly quickly and without hassle.
Famous last words which will come back and bite me no doubt.

Had another good evenings work out there tonight.got the front final skim on and flated back on 120 grit paper and have done some on the sides too.
By the end of the evening tomorrow it should all be flatted down and finished on 400 grit.Thats the plan anyway.
Heres a few pics...


It is starting to take shape as you can see and once all of the sanding is done I can then cut the final shape and then the fun stuff can start,just hope the neighbours love the smell of (napalm)resin in the morning!

Hello My Little Darlings
Had a great session out in the workshop tonight.
Decided to profile and then cut the splitter out rather than do the finishing on 400.
As it is so much more managable I can move the thing round and check that everything is square on the front edge.
The curvature I'm very pleased with because once it is all black you just ain't gonna see it without looking and thats what I'm after.
I havent finished the back edges as yet because I will fit the unit back up for a final check before the mould prep starts.



May not post tomorrow night as I have a monster day at work and will probably be Donald Ducked.

Thanks for the kind words.
It is coming along quite quickly now.
Having a well lit workshop is such an advantage and I am very lucky that I have the space to do this kind of work.For me its the guys who have a lock up with minimal space who are the heroes of what we do and the diligence they show in producing some awesome cars under less than ideal conditions.
The worst bit is going to be waiting for the mould to cure.Its always tempting to release a mould sooner rather than later and this can lead to warpage of the mould which is a no no.
I am hoping that I will be able to get the mould started this week but I have a huge job that I am waiting for confirmation on and that may throw a spanner in the works as it has to be complete by the 19th and we will have to work as many hours as we need to to get it done.
Anyway ,got to go to work now.

Hi All
Work prgressed well again tonight.
I have offered the splitter back up,profiled the leading edge and made sure that the edge is as parallel as I can make it to the curved face that sits up under the spoiler.It has also been cut to shape at the trailing edges too
I may get another chance to work on it tomorrow night but a huge emergency job has come in today and we have very little time to get it sorted.
I have to completely rebuild the back end of a Princess 54ft motor yacht by the end of play next Tuesday (gulp) so it's one of those whatever it takes jobs plus get the other jobs that need to be sorted by the weekend complete aswell.
Once we have these jobs sorted I will continue with this project so will catch up with you all then.
