The TH400 is a 4 speed yeas? Is OD really needed if you get the diff ratio right? I think most of the Jag ratio's are around 2.7 or something, a BB will rev roughly the same as the V12 so I assume gearing should be about right, though I'd probably want bigger tyres...

TH400 is a 3 speed.

If you can find one the way to go is with a Switch Pitch TH400. It's not exactly like having a splitter box but it does allow you to run tall gears and large tyres without everything bogging down on take off.

Adapter is straightforward. I made one for a 4L80e which is the 4 speed electronic version of the TH400 - Shares identical output shaft and bolt housing.

I got sooooo damn excited before realising the gear box was a $£%&@ automatic! :cry: :cry: :cry:

However it it can be done for that box, then maybe it can be done for other american manuals... after all, now that I have started my PhD, I will soon have access to CNC mills and lathes! :twisted:

I either want a box that is the same price as an lt77 (under 500) but stonger with better shifting, or one that is the same spec roughly as the lt77 but much cheaper (under 200 for one that doesnt need a rebuild).

Dont underestimate how good a decently configured autobox can be - they shift really nice, not slushy at-all.
Plus auto's are very easy on the drivetrain; With a 3.9 stage 1 engine I killed clutches, diffs and half shafts - with a 5.7 twin turbo I've broken nothing (well apart from a few TH700r4's until I figured out how to build a strong one)

I guess I am just one of those people who likes the feel of a manual! I am sure autos are better on the drivetrain, however i just cant bring myself to use one. I remember hearing an analogy once that involves sex and the level of control that is very appropriate! :lol: However I wont repeat it here...

I like to be incontrol of when the car shifts and it is especially important for me while off roading.

As for sequential or paddle shift..... you could have my attention there! :D

how about a manual shift kit on a th400, or just use the stick supplied? all the control you need and an infinatly slipping clutch for rock crawling?
You could also do Elliots conversion on a t56, in a landy you may still have room for a front seat passenger (I suspect the transfer box would be a few incches further back ! :lol:

Or if money is no problem go for the Land Rover TDV8 and gearbox, that gives you mahoosive torque and a sequential gearbox as well :D

Whats a manual shift kit? As for the front seat passenger.... I got rid of the centre seat years ago... Ive now got two bucket seats and a steel cubby box in the centre. have a look at my garage pics... it certainly aint a standard landy interior! :D

Still leaning on the manual side I am afraid... and yes, I am a stuborn bugger! :lol: I was one of those people who should have been born in the late 50's so I could grow up with old landies, v8s, led zepplin etc... instead I am stuck in this age of x-factor, mcfly, health and safety and silly modern cars you cant rebuild yourself... :shock:

^ Manual shift is when you change gear like normal but on an auto :)

basically a manual shift kit strips out the auto part of the auto box, all the bit related to automatically selecting gears against revs and throttle position. You are left with the stick and you use that to select the gears. The reason for removing it is the auto select bit doesn't like being over ridden all the time and eventually breaks if you manual select all the time.

So what sort of lever would be used to actuate it? a sequential stick or something?

You probably can get a sequential stick, alternatively it would just be 1,2,D etc
