I must confess that this was the first time I have attempted to set preloads. I followed the instructions oon the Rpi site and even bought a set of wire feeler gauges. I measured the gap in the tappet under the wire retainer thing and it all seemed good but then I cannot discount that I screwed up.

All eight valve seats were recut so recession isn't the issue. I also don't know just how much material was removed from each when the valves were done - I didn't think about its effect on the tappets etc. at the time. Unfortunately it does seem that I will need to remove the head one way or the other. I might strip these and measure from the spring seat and see what heights I have to see if they are even worth salvaging.

The bright side is that this has given me the incentive to get a set of more modern heads with the bigger valves so I suppose there's a silver lining in all things. Know back to the oily pit of despair.
