I dont understand it either?

As most of you know I am an MGB fan.

They already did this sort of upgrade when they made the MG RV8.
It came with a lot of goodies and a nice RV8.

The body panels could be tweaked so they would bolt onto an old GT like mine to give it a fresher look !

The MGB purists always harp on about originality.
I get moans about how I've bastardised mine. But before it looked differnet on the outside it had lots of hidden mods to make it better.

I think thats thats the key here. If it looks original on the outside then it gets a thumbs up from the purists as all the performance upgrades cant really be seen?

So I guess the idea was to make an MGB that looked normal, but had the performance on the road to match an MX5

I'm sure someone with too much spare money will buy one to put in a garage somewhere so it can be cared for and kept in pristine condition for many years. Then when they decide to sell it the car will either be worth a fortune as a rare original edition, but more likely it will still only be worth MGB money?

I could spend £30k building a spot on Cobra Replica that could be worth £35k as as soon as it was finished. And maybe would increase in value as years went by. Or at least hold its value for many years to come.

Yeah there are the MGB purists who insist on originality and fair play to them, I loved my original '68 when I had it. However I'm on the side of modifying the MGB, improving the original. It's a great classic with lots of originality and lots of potential. £62k is just daft money for one though, don't think the original works Sebring GTS cars are worth that!

For 62k I would find myself a Jensen FF and have it professionally
restored with updated bits to bring it into the modern era.

The cost is my point. Don't get me wrong, if the MGB is your thing then great, but lots of people have already "sorted" any issues for a lot less than £62k. For that money it has to be something special and the MGB just isn't.

I'd quite like a Triumph Stag with all that sort of stuff, electric retractable hood, LS3, modern 6 speed box, twitch all sorted out, smooth ride, warm, dry, and so on, but, at the end of the day, it would just be a Stag that had been modified to what I personally want.

Would it be worth £62k? Not a pinch. You may find some likeminded soul who likes your mods and will pay £15k or so, but for the most part, the car will be "ruined" as it will no longer have the original engine, etc. and be worth SFA to collectors and such.

So, for the £62k you'll get a brand new MX5 that looks like an MGB that someone has buggered about with... seems a bit steep to me.

I'm looking forward to see how many get sold!!

I wonder how much the production cost is and also wonder how much money has gone into R&D + test fabrication etc to get the thing to market?

It looks like they sell parts for MG's anyway, so their "R&D" is based upon the parts they and others have developed over time to modify existing MG's. Effectively you're getting a new MGB body shell, with all their "upgrades" already bolted on.

Alternatively you could find a solid non runner, buy all the upgrades seperately, source a MX5 engine from a scrappy and build the same thing yourself for 1/5th the price.
