Many thanks to Perry who has identified that I need a P6 front cover.
This link http://s144.photobucket.com/user/markwiseman1/library/ will take you to a picture of my current front cover (sd1)
and an indication of thickness and also a pic of the Buick and P6 pumps side by side. How much slimmer is the P6 cover and where do I get one from. Also will the sump holes line up with sd1 sump. More questions regarding this later.

My P6 definitely has two grooves- as others have said, one drives PAS, then other drives water pump and alternator.

P6B and SD1 timing covers are identical as far as the distance from the front of the block to the water pump mating face.

The P6B crank pulley only has one groove, the PAS pulley is separate and just bolts on the back of it.

If that's true then the two pulleys should line up or am I missing something?

Well that answers another question. I was wondering is a pulley bolted to the crank pulley would then line up with the water pump but if it bolts behind the crank pulley that's not going to help

Does anyone have a P6 front cover that they can measure the thickness from block to water pump mating face.

If you see my previous posting I've already said that SD1 & P6B are the same.

Yes I'd say you are, but without better pictures I can't say what.

LandyV8,
How much out of line is the crank pulley relative to the waterpump pulley?
An SD1 type front cover is the same thickness as all the previous 2WD types like P5's & P6's.

If the cover has a rope type oil seal then it should have a oil thrower disc between the pulley and the timing chain sprocket. Leaving the oil thrower out will cause about 1.5mm misalignment.

Of course it's also possible that the outer ring of the harmonic damper has become loose and moved forward a little.

Excellent! You've cracked it. It doesn't matter what front cover I have, they are the same thickness as one member has mentioned twice but the short crankshaft pulley from the P6 would had been designed knowing this "oil thrower" had to be in the equation in order to push the pulley out of the engine by 1.5 mm and thus matching up with the water pump. Brilliant! Now were would I get the missing culprit and do you know a part number?

Only 1.5mm ??

I thought you meant it was well out of line. Like a belt thickness or the amount you get when covers and other parts get miss matched ?

Well it's will push the pulley in the right direction and I'm guessing it may be thicker than 1.5. You've seen the photo of the misalignment. What it's also proved is I am missing a part.

I recently broke my thrower ring. I did get a replacement but that was after I had rebuilt. I cant see any problem with the pulleys on mine. I got the ring from one of the guys on here via the wanted section.
