V8+2 = V10 viper engined 7 replica, ongoing build project

Post by bj928 »

yes i know i might have a few cells missing in the brain department, but it sounded like a good idea at the time, its only what the americans did to the ac cobra, take a little english sports car and put the biggest engine you can get at the time in it, works for me, 8.3ltrs 500hp+, 525Ib/ft+ in a car weighing in at well under the tonne.

You don't mention what the car is being built for, but it is for road use I can't see that you will be able to pass SVA with that engine as it is very tall.

Assuming you can reinforce the chassis enough to take the torque, you will be horribly traction limited on anything other than slicks. F=muR will be your downfall.

V10 in a se7en. It's just wrong IMO.

What have you done in the diff carrier area of the chassis to prevent the differential from twisting the chassis with all that torque?

Hi bj, what a great effort that car is! Nice to see something a little crazy now and again. What shell are you using coz the chassis looks a little wider than stock? Also what rear end are you using?

Hi BJ
looks basically sound to me, might pop in a couple of short tubes to close up a couple of triangles in the engine bay and brace and triangulate across the front of the transmission tunnel by the bell housing. I presume you are planning to pop rivet and glue pannels inside and out on the chassis.
Sorry looks a good idea to me, should be alot of fun, don't think it will twist up if panneled and triangulated fully, and if the chassis stays stiff then the suspension can put the power to the ground.

the chassis isn't finnished fully yet, needed to see where the engine sat and how it went in and came out, so now i can work out what extra reinforcing i can add, the diff is a mustang 8.8 irs solid mounted, thinking of fitting a few gussets as well to make it really stiff.

the body is a wide body luego viento, they are about the biggest 7 replica about, the finnished car looks like this, although mine will be black.

must admit I didn't see the point of the bigger 7 chassis until you came up with this!

That's the traction issues settled then!

I must admit I like the shape, the screen looks kinda like the old racing car screens from many years ago, ferrari, alfa, etc. Better paint it red then!

Well, Lets do some sums. Let us say that, with driver and passenger on board it weighs 2000lbs (910kgs) and has a 50:50 weight distribution. This gives you 1000lbs on the rear wheels.

Let us also say that the wheel overall diameter is 24" and the diff is 3.27:1 (which I believe is a mustang ratio). Also car is in 4th gear which is 1:1 and has toyo R888s on (mu=1.2).

F=muR. R is 1000 so F=1200lbs. so torque on half shaft is 1200ftlbs to break traction (24" wheel diameter makes maths easy). 1200/3.27=366ftlbs. So basically anything over that in 4th gear will spin the wheels.

If you design a lot of squat into the suspension you will get a bit more, maybe 440ftlbs, but only in 5th and 6th gears will you be able to use full throttle. Each to their own, but seems to go against everything that CABC stood for.

The se7enesque chassis is not really designed for big torque. A full cage helps, but panelling adds very little if riveted, unless you have access to aircraft rivets and the right tools. Look at even a 100HP se7en after a few years and see how loose standard rivets become. Aerolam for the floor and sides is a big help if bonded in.

Anyway, that's enough pesky physics getting in the way, I'll shut up and leave you all to it.

I think I mentioned glue for the pannels, Methileacarilate would be a good choice.
Still sounds fun to me.
Most of the cars on this forum are put together and tuned to have more torque than the tyres can handle, this one just does it with a bit more brutality.
I would definatly have a good cage in it, but I assume you were going to anyway!
