Pistons for a Buick 300 crank

Post by Snakey »

I'm building a new Rover V8 around a 3.9 block and Buick 300 crank. I was planning to go down the Ford piston / Chevy rod route, but now I've been told that it's possible to use Rover rods with cut-down low compression R/Rover pistons - apparently there's supposed to be enough meat in the crowns to machine down.
Has anyone done this before, or is this a load of ****??
Thanks for a great forum,
Snakey

I'm calculating 7mm, but I don't have a low comp piston to trial assemble.

not a hope there is no way you can take that much off. Top of the crown is the same whether it is low comp or high so far as I now anyway.

Just looked up the strokes

3.9 is 2.800"
4.2 is 3.000"
300 is 3.380"

so 3.9 pistons would need 7.36mm removed
4.2 pistons would be 4.826mm which is still too much.

Thanks for that, Marki. Everything in me expected that reply, but my 'adviser' was so definite (as in, 'I just did this... and that...) that I had to check anyway. Should've trusted my own judgement!
