Exhaust Note

Post by Johnny Rotton »

I have a Westfield Seight with twin side exit exhausts. I have been disappointed with the lack of V8 burble and believe this could be sorted with a balance pipe between the 2 exhausts before the silencers. The problem is the lack of ground clearance to achieve this. Has anyone tried a balance pipe and does it work i.e. improved note and smoother running ? Also, how big does it need to be to have any effect ?

I bet when you are driving it you are only getting to hear 4 cylinders from the pipe on the drivers side. Hence your disappointment at the noise made.

A cross pipe is normally the same diameter as the pipe after the collectors.

Have you any space above the gearbox or bell housing to allow the cross pipe to fit?

I think the balance pipe in a westfield has been done, but will not give you the effect you need, it only balances the gas pressure from each side exhaust.

I have the standard westfield seight exhaust on mine, and to be honest the sound is lovely, a deep rumble at low speed and full machine guns on max throttle, the sound is addictive.

Its not a nice a sound as say a "tvr" or some American v8's....

But engine tuning & exhaust design can play the biggest part of any engine sound.

Now I have efi & and aftermarket ecu on mine, the sound is better than it ever was with carbs or factory efi system.

There is no room above gearbox or bellhousing. It would have to run underneath the gearbox, but this would reduce ground clearance. If it won't change exhaust note then little point doing it.

I have the standard Westfield silencers, but had them repacked last year with fibreglass and the note was quieter and not as good as before. Would Accoustafil produce a better note ?

I assume cast iron manifolds would be better for noise and reduced heat. Currently have stainless manifolds. Also have Weber 500 - interesting that efi gives a better sound than a carb.

I guess a system that runs to back of car would be the ultimate solution for a V8 burble.

If it helps, you could use an oval cross-sectioned tube for the balance pipe. would have more ground clearance

If you have room why dont you get some electronic exhaust cuts outs and put them in?
I have some on my set up and it never fails to put a childish grin on my face when I open them up and give it a bootful :D
Available from Summit and other performance places in US and at a heavy cost over here.
Or make some using SU throttle butterflies and central locking solenoids.

cheers
