Cold air intake edelbrock carb

Post by DaviesDJ »

have been looking at the dyno results from David vizard a cold air intake dyno pulls, looks like a good addition. Anybody got any ideas for a cold air intake for an edelbrock car b? Thinking about a non restrictive carb hat, cold one be made out of MDF ?? Thought it would be a nice insulating material like the phenolic wood board used in my carb plate?

something like this would be good....

http://www.ramairbox.com/

There was a post on the forum ages ago which had a link to a UK company that made something similar to the stuff in the link above but I can't find it!

An insulator under the carb is good for stopping the fuel in the carb boiling but I don't think it does much in terms of keeping the incoming air any cooler.

Hi
I am currently making something like this with a extreme oval filter lid and two 6"cone filters that will feed the air box via 3"tubes.
If it all works I will be able to make the air boxes and supply the tubes etc at a discounted rate to forum members.
Will post some pics up later for you to have a look at.

That would be great, thinking about making one out of MDF, for it insulating properties and ease of working- is this bonkers???

My concern would be if the carb backfires for any reason and you have a MDF box sat on top of it :-)

Sorry but that is a really bad idea.
Anything made from glue paper and timber fibres is just asking for trouble.

Great minds think alike :D
The air filter I have at the moment is not big enough to feed a 4.3

So what I did was to make a foam Caddy style airbox which would house a K&N extreme oval filter top and yet be low enough to fit under the bonnet

I made sure that i had the tubing here on hand to test fit and it all seems good.

After a bit of tidying up and some shaping the whole lot was gelled.

I have started to rub everything down to make a mould but my normal work has stopped play on this at the moment but basically the plan is to run the two 3" tubes forward to the end of the rocker boxes and then turn the pipes down to the areas just behind the headlights and hook up the big cone filters there.
My thinking is that the air being sucked down through the top filter will cause a venturi effect on the tubes and cold air coming in from behind the lights will get an extra suck which should draw air up into the airbox and help the engine breathe far better

The final item will be laminated using a fire resistant resin and a heat resistant flowcoat but ordinary chopped strand matt as I think this will be easier to use.

Will probably have to make a split mould though which will be fun
Cheers

You will need to use proper PU foam to make your plug as styrofoam will not be that easy to mould off or work acurately enough with.
The mold will have to be made in two sections because otherwise it would never release.
What I will do is take some pics of the underside as it is now for you to have a look at aswell.
If you want to pm me with some dimensions I can probably help you out with some foam if you want.

cheers

Thanks mate, will think about the dimensions and may well take you up on that

Hi DJ
As promised here are the pics.
It important for me to have as much of an airbox as I can get here so the bottom has been wedged to give a greater volume immediately behind the mounting ring.
I may also try to make a stub stack to help smooth the airflow but that will have to wait until the mould has been made.

Is this of any help to you?

Is the total cross sectional area of the intakes similar to the carb top?? Very nice shape indeed? Have you thought about thermal protection??

Hi DJ
The intake area will be considerably larger than the carb top as I will be using the two 3" tubes and the surface area of the filter top as well so flow will not be restricted.
When I make the final piece I will use a fire retardant resin and a heat resistant flow coat.
Heat transfer from the manifold is limited because I have a spacer plate.
This should all work quite well (I hope)

cheers
