cheap points or have i got bigger problem
Hi All
Had alot of problems thought it was fuel starvasion took carbs off twice but just found problem points keep closing (v8 with su carbs). intermotor ponits / going to buy some lucas points
Distributor v8 which points can be adjusted from bolt in the side of distributor and points stay in fixed position
anyway adjust them start up will run about 1 minute them cut out as if no petrol
check points and there almost closed done this about 5 time just to make sure it was,nt me
the adjuster nut on side distibutor is just going in and in and is not moving out as if to close points
has any one had this happen and possible cause.
Thanks Nige Hope this all makes sense

Is your dizzy worn?
Try by seeing if you can move the shaft sideways. If so your points will never set correctly

Wrong coil ? had this problem before when i was getting 7 miles to a set of points !
i put a big ballast resistor from an early transit in and it was fine
Aren't they supposed to be 12v start 9v run or something ?
Perry the very early P6 engines came with the adjuster on the outside so you could adjust the dwell angle
Also does the plastic piece on the points look melted at all compared to a new one ?

So thats where it went !
If you look inside the distributor the external adjuster threads into a plastic fitting on the baseplate, and the threads on those plastic fittings strip. There's normally enough thread in there to set the initial adjustment, but then it strips and moves in use. Luckily enough a points nut is the correct thread, and will screw on to the adjuster, and embed itself in the plastic, so everything then works as it should.
