Tubular exh. manifolds Range Rover?

Post by Lasse Kristensen »

Hello.
I was out yesterday, looking at a RRC 86' model for spares. It had tubular exhaust manifolds and what appearet to be Rimmer Bros stainless pipes and mufflers. The manifolds ran quite tight to the chassis rails - actually so tight, that the right side manifold has the two centre exhaustpipes pressed flat to clear the chassis rail!
Is this a normal setup, and is it better than the cast manifolds? I reckon that the two middle cylinders will have somewhat reduces flow compared to the outer cylinders.
Anyways, my RRC is a 3,9 Efi with cats and lambda - I assume this exhaust system with these tubular headders won't work on my RRC?

Best regards, Lasse Kristensen

I don't know if they will fit a system with cats or not, but I do know they are much noisier (cabin noise) than the cast manifolds. I used to use them, but switched back to cast manifolds for comfort!

:) The sound won't be an issue. I checked the Rimmerbros site, and it seems all their tubular manifolds have this tight fit on the two middle pipes at the right hand side of the engine, towards the chassis rails.
I'll have to modifiy these pipes for lamba sensors and cats though, not sure if it's worth the hassle over buying new parts that fits...
Thanks for your input :).

I have had the Rimmer Brothers system on various RRC's and it's currently on my CSK and my 98 Disco.

Both mine have ports for the Lambda connections, I retro fitted one set and the others came already fitted.

I can't say I noticed a massive increase in noise and I didn't dyno any of the cars before and after fitting so I can't say if it increased efficiency or power.

This photo might show clearance slightly better...

You can also get a "stud kit" to fit these which I will most likely be buying when I do my engine swap in the next few months, just waiting for the block to come back from the machine shop currently :)
