flywheel / crankshaft question.

Hi,
Hoping you can help, gone and confused myself with too many crankshafts in the garage and can't remember how to put back together ... even got three v8 manuals and still not absolutely sure.

Anyway, here goes ... its a manual gearbox goning on a 3.9 engine, changed from a 3.5. Does the fly wheel bolt straight on to the cranks shaft with out any spacers?

In a box which I used to keep associated stuff together is a spacer or adapter with six bolt holes which line up with those on the crank shaft, it also has four (from memory) other threaded holes. Also in the box is a thin plate, think its called a reinforcing plate. The bits in the box, are they for an auto box?

Is the reinforcing plate the same size as the spacer?
Is the spacer about 25mm thick?
Both for an automatic from memory.

Non of my manual flywheels needed any spacer on the end of the crank and all have offset bolt holes so they only fit in one position.

As others have said, you don't need any spacers when you bolt a manual flywheel onto a rover crank. The bits you describe are for an auto flexplate.

If the 3.9 engine was originally an automatic then it will need a new spigot bush to match the front shaft of the manual gearbox.

Good call Dennis, I had purchased a new spigot bush for a 3.9 manual and as you say it is a different size to the one in the end of the crank... if only it would come out, sure it will eventually.

Have you tried packing it with grease and bashing a good fit bar into the hole. Some tape around a smaller bar usually works also.

Some people have used a small rawlplug to remove the bush.

Wet newspaper stuffed in tight and followed by a tight fitting rod and a good belt from a buggering stick should do it.

If you're going manual you won't need the spacer/adapter you mention having, so if you want to put it to good use "koopsterman" on this very forum is in need of said item.
