LT77 Speedo drive removal

Post by V8Paul »

MY LT77 has a broken speedo drive (doesn't turn when gear engaged. I have a replacement to fit but the old one doesn't seem to want to come out. I've taken the clamp off but the drive itself won't pull out.

Is there a knack to it or is it stuck in there for good?

I can't find a suitable picture ATM but the workshop manual shows the speedo pinion, then an O ring, hten a "bearing" and then the retaining plate. With the plate removed the pinion and O ring etc should just pull out once the bearing is out of the way. Maybe the O ring has rotted and is sticking (?)

I have a picture from a Haynes manual, but can't see how to upload it to a reply. It is just as Robin described and once the clamp is removed it should pull out ( mine did) as it's just sealed by an 'O' Ring.

The clamp is the only mechanical thing holding it in.

Maybe someone in the past has sealed in with silicone/glue rather than replace the o-ring?

Maybe you could try slipping a small screwdriver/blade in there and 'gently' tweaking it.

If still no luck I have one in my garage could send you a photo.

Not alot of luck so far, tried to lever it out and no joy, it moves up a little but won't actually lift out. I'm abit nervous that it might have chewed all the plastic gear up and it's mis-shapen. have you got a pic of one pulled out?
