Anyone have any dealings with these geared starter motors?
Just had one from Rimmer bros, the old SD1 kept packing in every 6 months, soleonids packing up after car only being used 6 months of the year; All fitted ok, and starts no problem, on disengaging it makes a loud screech noise, sounds painful and is similar noise to it not engaging properly on start up, but this is on disengaging not engaging. Have removed it and checked the teeth, depth etc and all ok, no signs of metal on metal, my 1st thought was perhaps its spinning up to far and having trouble coming off the flywheel but if anything it actually doesnt quite engage as far as the original so thats put that thought out. Anyone here have these fast starters and how does your sound on engaging and disengaging? Rimmers were no help and all I got was dont know.

I have had more than a few problems with my GRS but have now got it sorted thanks to the guys I bought mine from.
Mine made a hell of a row on trying to start and more often then not it would not disengage as the bendix was incorrectly positioned on the shaft.
Count the teeth on your Bendix and measure the O/D of the Bendix compared to an original ( if you cant do this I can measure a standard one here for you.)
This may well be the problem.
The GRS's can have a small overun on the disengage which can sound a bit odd at times.

Is this on an SD1, or just an SD1 motor? On my SD1 occasional reluctance of the starter to engage was due to corrosion on a starter relay terminal - it's situated inside the front wing beside the battery. All these reduction gearing motors seem to be from small companies using secondhand parts. I'd wonder just how accurately made they are.

Just an update, after removing and double checking everything I found no differences with the geared starter compared to the original, same teeth, diameter etc, therefore ordered a replacement from Rimmers.
This they changed no problem and where very happy to exchange, fitted it and exactly the same problem.!!!
I have found if I turn the key back just as its about to fire it sounds ok, the disengaging noise seems to be when you spin the engine over it fires but you havent released the key quick enough,(I say quick enough but you actually have to release the key prior to normal) .
Any how seems im going to have to live with it at the moment, just thought this info maybe of use to others thinking of the conversion

I've recently fitted one of these, and apart from spinning quicker and sounding slightly different I have not noticed a run on effect. I did however on an old Volvo. Not sure if these starters are the same but if the electrical cut-out/solenoid doesn't disengage there was a mechanical clutch which made quite a racket for a second after starting then when quiet.
