302 gearbox options

Post by martinez »

doing a rebuild on a 302, but seeing the price of used T5s and Tremecs I'm thinking there must be an alternative (read cheaper idea  ) so anyone any knowledge on a conversion ? LT77 or Getrag perhaps ? and what about bellhousings ? just a plate needed or complete change ?
any advice appreciated

Hi
I think the T5 is the cheepest option as you already have one, also it has enough strength for the 302, a rebuild kit seems to be around £200 + delivery from the states

You will need to confirm version. Youtube has rebuild videos for this box and a manual for £20 would seem the far cheeper and easier than changing box.
A Lt77 will break behind this engine, even a just rebuilt one, I doubt the 380 will last much longer and making an adaptor plate will be alot of work, doubt you will see change out of £1k by you have sorted out a plate and clutch plus a rebuilt box.
I don't know which Getrag you are thinking of but the costs are similar to the 380 plus a rebuild will cost more.
Best regards

thanks for that, but I don't have a T5 ! or any other suitable gearbox. I'm thinking maybe it'll have to be a Tremec. Anyone done this before ?

I bought a T56 from these people

Does not look like they have any T56's left but the one in the link should work with the right bell housing.

nice work matey on the Sierra
thing I'm unsure of with the Tremec is that one company I found on ebay stated that the box will fit a 302 with a small mod. Whereas others seem to say that the box only fits the modular 4.6. :?
will have to do more research methinks
any info still much appreciated

The 'small mod' is a super bodge that involves chopping off bits of your engine to clear the starter as well as relying on just the bolts to align the engine and box

Since you're in the UK, the 86-92 Toyota Supra Turbo was, I believe, available. It's transmission, the 5-speed R154 is a very tough box and can be bolted up to a Ford 302 T5 bellhousing with this adapter:

Stevieturbo, on this forum has experience with this particular box.

How do you ever find things like that on Amazon------used to be a online bookshop,
The R154 is a real toughy, depending on how far you intend building the 302, the W58 supra box is pretty tough too, its what I run in my cortina, [not broken it yet]
Cavman, he is on this site has a R58 for sale
THE SMOKING GNU
12.604 with an old boiler of a RV8 and no gas

Ford racing used to sell a smallblock type T56. If you're going to make lotsa torque I wouldn't be using a T5. The other option is the Tremec 3550/TKO 500 or 600 but these are rotten things to shift and they have their fair share of problems when the power levels rise.
You can see the bell for the T56 in this link....
