Sump Plug

Post by Simeon »

does anyone know where I can get hold of a sump plug with a 1/8 nptf hole for a temp sensor? This would be for a standard RV8 sump

I drilled and tapped one of the spare blanks on the side of the oil pump housing. I think some engines use these as oil cooler ports.

Good idea Richard but I have the Mocal replacement oil pump cover which does have a port but thats needed for oil pressure, also if you used that with a T piece would you not get stagnant oil and not get a true reading?

I have a Mocal remote filter so also a Mocal cover. There are several possible ports looking from the driver's side of the engine at around 10:00 position. One is further away than the other.

I have both a serp engine and an old SD1 and both have sufficient possibilities - I'm sure. If you want me to check / post a photo but it should be obvious.

(No doubt someone will correct me, though!)

Thanks for the info Richard but believe me it's not obvious! Could you please show a photo of the possible areas on the pre-serpentine version.

Thanks again

Are there not some large nuts to unscrew? I'll try and take a photo this weekend.

You have PM

Here are the photos. The first one shows my Mocal remote oil ports and the sender with the single connector is the oil pressure switch light on the dashboard. I’m not sure what the sender above it is but it was with the engine as it came out of an 1978 SD1 and was connected to the SD1’s wiring loom – it has three blade connectors. (I’m only using this engine as a stop gap measure.)

Image

(Edited to say I don't know why I cannot get this photo but I can't and I'm just about to go off for the weekend. Same with third photo.)

This picture shows the Pressure Relief Valve under the 3 bladed sender.

Image

This picture shows a port diagonally opposite the 3 connector sender underneath the oil pump. There is also another one of these underneath and I think these are for an oil cooler. The first one is shown in the RV8 manual as the flow to an oil cooler but the manual show the return about where the 3 bladed sender is but mine is underneath.

Hope this all helps.

Thanks for the photos Richard but you seem to have a different oil pump cover to me, I've got this one

http://www.merlinmotorsport.co.uk/produ ... m=Shopping

As you see it only has one port but a T piece would'nt pick up oil temp correctly. I do have a solution though the port in the cover will be used for temp sensor only and I've only just discovered this baby

http://www.speedflowshop.co.uk/jic-male ... t-69-c.asp

This can be used for the pressure sender

Thanks again

the switch with the 3 blades on it is a safety switch, for your fuel pump. when there is no oil pressure it cuts the pump. there are 2 sets of contacts, 1 set normally open, 1 set normally closed. when oil pressure is present, the contacts switch over. the centre blade is the common to feed into.

So now I know! Ironic then that I have spent a lot of time wiring in the same safety feature using relays and an interior light timer into my main loom for my other engine when I swap this old V8 after IVA back to a TVR V8. I may just keep this as an option as it is much more simple. Thanks.

Simeon, glad to be of (no) use!

For my oil temperature sender i've welded a plate onto the side of the sump which i've drilled n tapped to suit.

This way, when you come to drain your sump of oil you don't have the hassle of a sender being in the way (in my case it's a mechanical one).

I also noticed that on my RRC v8, the passenger side exhaust manifold came awfully close to the sump plug whereas there is a fair gap on the other side.

If you're after a sump plug / plate to weld onto the side, i could drill n tap 1/8 npt for you.

Cheers

That's the way I did mine on my IIA. I'm using military capillary gauges, John Craddock sold the adaptor for the capillary sensing bulb, so i welded that straight in to the sump.
