Bloody nora mate!!
I know the sick feeling that keeps rumbling through your guts right now. Been there twice myself with major failures. But at least those were on old spunker blocks that only cost 5 bob!
After all your efforts this last year or so as well..Damn!!
They cant have been scuffing when you put them in because you would have felt the friction when turning over by hand to install the pistons eh?
Even if you had fitted (and dont take offence because I know you wouldnt have done this) the rods the wrong way round you would have felt the friction when fitting if they had been hitting that hard to make such a groove.
So the pins must have moved for some reason. I've never seen this before to this extent. I have seen scuffing on an engine which had circlips on the pins when one boke in two. But it was much lighter than this.
What on earth could have put enough force on the pins to keep the pressure on??
I'm just guessing mate. But its plain to see that whatever external force has acted on those two pins it has been constant enough to keep them wanting to move one way only.
I know I'm stating the obvious. !!
Is it possible to just have stock liners put back in. Or do you have to go for top hats the second time around?
I'm gutted for you mate!

Sorry dude
that sucks big time.....
You just gotta stick with it now and dont give up (easy to say I know). Had an old shovel head harely I lavished a huge amount of time and money on, do the same thing wrecking a very exspensive forged piston and custom made barrel only to find that the resultant swarf finnished just about everything else off too, all caused by an iffy pin that broke up! I started again and the end result was worth it
Best of luck and keep the faith....

Tony,
That is a bummer, can only think that when the 4.0 pistons were fitted back on the rods they got them wrong on a couple of rods and the result being when fitted down the bore was that the gudgeon pin would move to one side and and run against the bore, can't see how it could happen any other way.
Just out of interest, should the lettering on the pistons be upside down? if not the pistons and rods are the wrong way round.
Kevin.

Hi Kevin,
yup you are correct if you look at the rest they are the same,
reason being i bought the rod/crown combo off a forum member, back in 2008.
and when we fitted them in the engine they had the crowns with cut outs fitted the wrong way wrond,
so when you lined the dimples up to face each other on the rods, the cut outs were at the outer edge of cylinder not towards the V, hence the reason why my crowns have 4 valve cutouts like chevy pistons
.
this was brought up somewhere on the forum over a year ago,
and was informed should be ok to do what we have done,
also asked an engine builder, they said not ideal but should be ok as not all pistons are marked anyways,
I asked about getting the rods turned, and no one wanted to comit to doing and not wrecking the pistons, even RS were not keen,
unless i had a spare set of crowns.
2 in my 3.9 block i use to use previous to the 4.6 were upside from the factory
we shall find out later today the extent of the damage
but its defo looking like im not going to be on the road again this year now,
was going to get the block TH linered but its so fooking expensive, plus im going to need another set of rods now to be safe and set of 4.0 pistons, may as well save up and go ls1 chevy or something .....

Hi Tony,
Sorry to see you have ended up with such a major problem. I'm sure all the guys on here feel for you at the moment. But don't give up.
Coming back to the problem, from the previous post are you saying that your pistons are installed back to front with the arrow on the crown pointing to the rear. These pistons (the 4.0 & 4.6 type) have offset gudgeon pins to reduce piston slap and therefore must be fitted the correct way round.
Regards Denis

Hi Denis,
looks like i was told an expensive porky then,
cant remember there being any arrows on the crowns, but will double check later,
but looks like we have found the problem though,
thanks mate.
werid why its only 2 cylinders and not all 8 that have picked up on the pin.
looking at getting the block relinered on the buggered two,
and hunt down another set of 4.0 pistons and a set of 4.6 rods,
oh the fun never ends eh
