Crower 50229 Cam

I'm converting my 1995 3.9 Discovery to 4.6 and want to use a Crower 50229 cam which I have been reading good reports about (mainly from the US) in terms of high torque low down in the rev range which is just what a 4x4 needs.

However the 4.6 has the cam retaining plate which I'd like to use but I understand the Crower cam, which is designed primarily for the Buick 215 - 340 range, does not have a shoulder for using the cam retaining plate.

Does anyone know if these cams are available for sale from the likes of D&D, V8 Tuner with a modified end to allow the retainer plate to be fitted? I’ll be using the usual distributor drive skew gear and interim timing cover.

Hi, i think v8 tuner can adapt them, your better off sending an e-mail to him to make sure,hes normally pretty quick at replying :) rich

I remember Paul of V8Tuner saying that he could have the camshaft machined for the retainer plate for little extra money.

Rob,

The Crower 50232 I got from Paul at V8 Tuner came machined for the retainer plate so he should be able to supply the 50299 to the same spec.

Its easy, I did mine in a few mins in the lathe.

Tell Paul when you order that you want the cam plate retainer recess machined on the cam, and he gets it done before sending, what i had done to my 50233

It's taken me a while to dig through my pile of bits but the cam retaining "plate" from my 4.0 X-bolted block is just a semi circle - is that standard??

Tony - where did you get your (full-circle) retaining plate?



On a side issue - I hope to rebuild a 4.6 X-bolted block,(hopefully) ported heads/JWR Offy manifold, waisted valve stems and short springs. Edelbrock 500 fitted.

What sort of cam do you recommend? Will be in a relatively light cobra replica

The round cam retainers were used with the interim front cover. The half circle retainers were used on the non-distributor type front covers. Not sure how interchangable the two retainers are.

Turning the shoulder for the retainer location on is easy to do if you know how to run a lathe. It is a very simple cut and the material is not(very) hard.

Mister Pocket Rocket!

I had the same thing, bought a 4.0 X-bolted block and fitted an old style cam. The horshoe type retaining plate as fitted to your 4.0 runs in a groove in the end of the cam- stopping it moving both ways. You need a full circle type as Tony posted and machine your new cam (as in the pic). The bolt holes are the same and will only fit 1 way as they are offset.

Any recommendation as to a suitable cam? I'd like to try and keep a reasonable idle if poss.

What spec heads are you going to run and what usage intended for the car.

No point in getting a cam with breathing potential in excees of the heads as this will just cost you power overall.

I'm running a Crower 50232 in my 4.35 but have stage 3+ heads, having recalibrated the edelbrock 500 I have got the engine idling smoothly at 1000RPM and it will drive along smoothly at 1500 RPM in 4th gear drop it down to second and it's like the proverbial scalded cat.

The other thing is that whilst the JWR manifold is a good all round manifold it's not the best for top end power so would probably recommend some thing a little softer than the cam I have. will check the numbers and come back.

This one will give good drivabilty and a useful increase in power, with stage 1 or 2 heads (Big Valve) should produce around 225+ BHP
