Baffled Sump

Post by topcatcustom »

Building a RR baffled sump, I have put a 1.5l bigger box on the bottom and just wondering where to put the trapdoors. With oil pick up in original place I was thinking maybe this? Baffles in red, trapdoors in blue, or I could move the oil pickup back to the centre and put 4 doors in?

Ian, I have seen that post before, looks good but I could never work out exactly what was inside!!! Also seen the other pics on a seight website, look good but doesn't look like a lot of extra width inside, the chambers behind the trapdoors must be rather small!

Trap doors are open to each wing, and only open in one direction, opposing each other, they both open into the center well, so if the G forces are pushing the oil towards the left, the weight of the oil holds the LH door shut, restricting the oil flow away from the pickup, and the RH door opens, allowing the oil to flow from that side, the Top baffle plate stops the oil climbing out under braking and accelleration, which also is the same reason there is a funnel down to the pickup, so all the returning oil returns to that area,

LOL it is the sump I bought to Castle Race Engine on Fleabay.

Now sold but I can ask to the new owner if he can take pics. I think he has not yet installed the sump.

I get the basics  but thanks, what do you think about the layout? The trapdoor at the rear would help under acceleration as the sump is fairly long, not much room for one at the front for braking so I thought a curved baffle about an inch from the (P38 small welded onto the earlier pipe) pick up would help hold oil, whilst the rear trapdoor is releasing it into the 'catcher' as well. I guess there could be room for a door but not much room for it to swing, the problem is that to get them to open a half decent amount you have to move the walls they hang in back from the pick up, which makes the centre box quite big and the reserviors behind the doors smaller, which may not actually be a major problem...

I'd like to build this for as much of an 'ideal situation' as possible, and for a good trial, if that means even more doors then so be it!

Also should the seperate reservoirs be completely sealed from each other or should there be mitred corners to let them even out a bit whilst not under extreme circumstances?

Yes, they should be able to flow to each other, and I left room for air to circulate at the top of the "walls" to aid the movement of oil too, if you have space, go for the rear trap door, obviously, the bigger/wider the door the better if movement is restricted,
one thing I wish I had done on my sump now, is made the top plate removable, or even the whole baffle assy bolt in, so it can be removed for cleaning or modification if needed.

Removable top plate sounds sensible, how far do the doors need to open if they are about 2" wide? Also do you think it would be worth trying to squeeze one in the front instead of the curved wall too?

my doors dont open much more than 12mm, and are about 2.5" wide, they are on very loose hinges so there is little chance of them jamming either,
Front door??, I never had intentions of fitting one, as space was a issue, I was not too bothered about this one hence the curved wall and the two flat plates to stop the oil climbing out and along the sump, especially as this surge would only be created in braking conditions, and off throttle.

I did look at fixed baffle sumps too, I quite fancied a labyrinth type baffle on 2 or 3 layers as space was a bit tight, much in the way flowmaster baffles are made, that would probably have worked as well, but the need for some decent folders and probably a shear too, sort of held me back.

Looks like the one I bought also,
not installed it as I have a late style front cover so it don't fit.

I am thinking of cutting and shutting the longer front onto it.

or would I be better just making a 4.0/6 sump with trap doors.
