Got a new carb to manifold gasket from Rimmer (Offy to Holley) and it's the open type, ie has a single large hole in it rather than the individual 4 holes for each barrel.
Is this ok to use or should I get the one with the separate holes? Just wondering about not keeping the porting separate going from the carb to the manifold.
The carb is an old Carter 4brl carb so very similar to a holley and an Offy JWR dual port manifold...
Just for information the Carter is virtually the same carb as the Edelbrock and not like a holley apart from being 4 barrel.
The 400 is quite a good size carb to use on a mild rover v8 especially a 3.5/3,9 engine.
Also the jets, rods andf step up springs from Edelbrock can be used for calibration of the Carter carb, a friend has a Carter 500 and apart from the branding it is identical to my Edelbrock 500.
I would have thought it was desirable to have a closed type gasket but you would probably not notice the difference unless racing or something, in which case you would probably be using a 360deg manifold anyway!
If you are using the offy dual port manifold then yeah, the closed gasket is the way forward, otherwise you are detracting from any 'benefits' of the manifold. It's dual port design relies on the primaries and secondaries being separate and also both primaries are separate from each other, each feeding one bank. If I remember correctly, the offy 360 keeps primaries and secondaries separate, so if that's what you have, you should use such a gasket, or if you have the eddy then use an open gasket.
After all that, my advice is use the gasket that fits the manifold.
