What gearbox have I bought??
I am worried that I might have dropped a bit of a clanger.....
I bought a running 3500 V8 Range Rover engine coupled to a 5 speed manual box for my kit car (Seven Style). I am hoping I can use this for 2WD. Have I got the wrong gearbox or am I worrying needlessly?
Many Thanks
Stuart

Stuart i got your message , it sounds like it might be a Flapper setup you have , easy way to tell can you see through the airflow meter ..?
the other thing if it's from a rangerover it will be a 4wd manual box and the gearbox and the bell housing are differant for the 2wd
even the flywheel is differant , the rangy clutch and flywheel won't fit inside the 2wd bell housing
what you need is an SD1 bell housing and an SD1/TR7 or sherpa gearbox they will all do the job
TR7 boxes are normally the cheapest on ebay
this is the 2wd bell housing and box

Re: What gearbox have I bought??
You could buy the LT77 that "TheV8Kid" has up for sale for 100 quid, that box will work fine on a 3.5 lump. I believe (but could be wrong) that the 4x4 boxes have the wrong ratio's for starters. The clutch plate might need to be changed if you use the LT77 as the splined shaft could be a different size compared to the box that you have got at the moment.stuartl wrote:I am worried that I might have dropped a bit of a clanger.....

Thanks for all the tips guys! I have a manual flywheel so I can use that at least. I wont get the LT77 just yet as I havent got any room until I get rid of some of the redundant engine parts. I will contact the V8kid and see about his gearbox. Thanks for all the tips.
Next question is who wants a five speed Rangey Gearbox???

the flywheel is differant , the rangy has a larger clutch cover so the hole in the flywheel in the wrong place to bolt an SD1/ldv clutch to and you will need to change the spigot bush in the end of the crankshaft too as it's smaller diam on the 2wd lt77
be careful as the LT77 is 2 and 4wd , it just refers to the distance between the gears = 77mm
if your handy with the spanners .. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Rover-V8-5-speed- ... 240%3A1318
or if these have right size spigot tip 16mm i think , will do the job too , you will still need the bell housing ..
this one has the REALLY expensive gear stick holder too

yes
although you will need to change the spigot bush in the end of the crankshaft for a smaller diameter one , as far as i can remember the rangy uses a 5/8" internal diam one and the SD1 uses a 12mm or 13mm one ??
if you start looking for an SD1 clutch people go "that'll be a huge amount of money please "
have a look here :http://www2.qha.com/q-pid/QPID.aspx?user_id=&session=
the kit you want is a QKT207AF ..but if you look at the seperate parts you will find that the plate and cover cross with loads of other things and it's only the thrust bearing that is differant , favoutite is LDV cluches , have a look on ebay i got my last set ( plate and cover ) for under £20 NEW

Is it a big job to change the spigot Bush?
If you can find a solid bar that is a good fit in the bush that you want to get out you can hammer it out. The bar needs to be a good fit but not a tight fit. (You can push it in and out by hand)
You then fill the bush up with grease and place the bar in the hole and it it with a hammer, the grease then pushed the bush out of the crank. You need to re-pack the bush with grease several times. It sounds mad but it does work!
