SU carb advice required.

I've been given a pair of su's no. FZX1412. The book says these are an HIF44 carb and that they are oe on metro 1300 engine from the 80's. The carbs are very good condition and I want to use them on a 3.5 that will be making no more than 190-200hp. What needs to be done to use these on an RV8?

Hairbear,

The SU's for the 3.5 engine sre HIF6 1 3/4" with a four bolt fitting, I think the HIF44 must be 1 1/2" and will be too small and wont even fit the carb manifold. Do a check measure of the throats to see what size they are.

The HIF6 carbs are certainly ok for around 200BHP and possibly a bit more although you would have to do the basic stage 1 job on the heads (see Peter Burgess web site for his econotune heads) and fit a slightly better cam to achieve that figure.

Do you have the manifold, if not I have one and a pair of HIF6 carbs you can have cheap.

I've measured the carb where it meets the manifold and it's definately a 1.75". The flange is 2.125" square bolt pattern, I haven't offered it up to a manifold to see if it fits yet. I do have an old P5 inlet that I was hoping to use if it all bolts up ok. My main concern is that they may not be made to be mounted at an angle as per the rover v8 carbs. The guy I got em from had them as spares for an SD1 though so I am hopeful that a needle change and balancing up will be all that is needed.. or is that being hopelessly optimistic! :lol:

You could give Burlen Fuel Systems a ring and see whether they will work on the P5 or SD1 type manifold.

Metro HIF44 carbs are basically the same as SD1 carbs. Same bolt pattern so fitting is not a problem. Inclined position is not a problem either because they fitted on an nage in e.g. Mini and Metro applications.

One possible problem that you do have is the linkage. SD1 carbs are handed, i.e. LH carb and RH carb (they are mirror images) whereas Metro carbs are not. So, you need to get creative and do your own linkage. IMHO Rover V8 SU linkage is PITA to begin with and if you use metro carbs things will get even more complicated.

Your best bet is to get on Burlen Fuel Systems website, and get a list of parts that make up each carb. You can then compare the lists to find out what's different..... Then you can decide what you need to change.

HIF44 = Horizontal Integral Floatchamber 44mm (1 3/4)

I would be tempted to use 2 throttle cables, very clean and tidy and once you have set them up there is potentially less give in the system than using 1 cable and complicated mechanisms with lots of joints! Cut the cables the same length, I got some stainless braided cables off ebay with all fittings for not a bad price and they look fantastic, plus are teflon lined so there is no friction at all. I think they are Featherlite or something...

HIF44 have been used largely on SD1 and from 1984 they are AED type.
Also used on Land Rover 90/110/127/130 since 1986 and Discovery in 1989.
Marcus I not at home before wednesday but I have the Burlen parts catalogue and I can check the specificity of your carbs If you want (which needle has been used).
