Oil for R380

Post by Stephen Leckie »

What is the best oil grade and type to put in a newly reconditioned R380 gearbox, running a Landrover 90 with a 4.8 litre V8, 300 hp, 300 ft/lbs, 1.66-1 transfer box (18mph per 1000 rpm)? Engine revs to 6150. Road use only.

A fully synthetic 75W80 gear oil such as Redline MTL or Castrol SMX-S or Royal Purple Synchro-max 75W90.

I used MTF94 for my recon R380. Obtained from local LR dealer.

R380 runs ATF in a land rover, I've used Dexron 3 or 4 in a race motor, it lasts no probs.

we use MTF94 in the gearboxes of the wolf landrovers at work

MOD told us to stop imediatly as it was killing the R380 boxes too early instead we use 20w50 engine oil

just something to think on
v8's everywhere at least the one in the spare bedrooms gone now

mrs happy again
