Smaller water pump pulley, good idea or not?

Post by Rick-Manta »

I've seen advertised at a few places a replacement 'uprated' water pump pulley for the post '71 RV8 engines. They're polished alloy which is why I want one, but they are 0.5" smaller in diametre than the OEM pulley, sure it'll increase the water flow but won't that knacker the pump bearing quicker? Anyone using one?

The pump really isn't an issue but if your engine spends a lot of time at high revs water cavitation could be. You sure this wasn't for a pre 71 engine as in P5-P6? These are fairly common as they were large originally. I made mine smaller when I made the serp pulley kit for mine.

I'll have to double check, I just assumed it was for the later (SD1 fitted) engines as that was what most of the stuff I was looking at, was for. Shame if it for the P6 is as I really want one for my '84 engine :( . Best I invest in some hi-polishing gear instead!!

Did the earlier engine water pumps pulleys have and extra bolt? Mine's got three bolt holes. I was considering using a later water pump as I can't use a viscous fan in my application, but I'm guessing they use serpentine pulleys as standard?!

This is the pulley I thought you might be on about http://www.v8tuner.co.uk/product.php?id=216 . The late serp pumps wont fit your front cover. As far as I am aware if you have a 2wd front cover you only have 2 choices of pump which are the P6 or the SD1. All the others are for the 4wd cover that are a different fitment. There are loads of different pumps for the 4wd as they were the longest used and used in a lot of different vehicles.

That's the one, Wouldn't this fit my water pump? It looks just like mine but with smaller diametre, or maybe it has a bigger hole in the middle, I can't tell from the picture.

Its a big hole in the middle. If you look at that picture there is a large alloy middle bit then at the back there is pulley itself. If your pump has the large middle bit then its a P6 pump that you have and not an SD1. If you don't have the large middle then that pulley wont fit, it wont even fit the v belt as they are as different size as well.

Mine's deffo a SD1 pump so it won't fit PAH! :( Looks like I'm going to have to get the hi-polishing gear instead! Cheers mate.
