Looking for some advice for my buddy.
A while back my friend bought a boat with what he thought was a Chevy V8, which turned out to be buggered.
After a lot of mucking about we then found out that it was really a ford V8.
He then took the boat to a local boat yard to get it sorted, who stripped the engine out sourced a replacement and then went to fit.
He is now saying the engine that came out was 5.7 litre not the 5 litre that should be in it and what the replacement engine is.
And is now saying the 5.7 litre engine sump wont fit the 5 litre, the inlet manifolds are different and is saying that water pump seals are knackered ( think he really means gasket to replace water pump from old engine to new.
So cutting to the nitty gritty, does any the ford boys know if the sumps and inlets would be different between the 5 litre and 5.7 litre.
If so where can he get these parts and where can he find a water pump or gaskets.

from what I researched when I was deciding on engines.
I would check what you actually have here, a 351 windsor should interchange virtually everything on the outside of the engine with the 302, (inlet may be a bit different) as far as I know the the windsor block is a taller deck height version of the 302.
The cleavland is a different beast, the heads can be put on a 302 or 351W but only with quite alot of work, outside, and inside is otherwise very different.
Others will know better than I but I really check what your friend has before you spend more money on it.

I would guess we are talking either Cleveland 351 or Windsor 351,
A Quick way to see if its a windsor or Cleveland, whip off the rocker cover, and see if the vaves are set at different angles to each other or in a line like a Rover, straight and its a windsor and at differnt angles its a cleveland, the other way is the timing chain is mounted inside the block and the windsor has a timing cover similar to the Rover
Both the engines come from a totally different family and have very little interchangability.

5.0 (302) Windsor and 5.7 (351) Windsor and 351 Cleveland sumps are all different.

Heads are the same on Both Windsors but as the 351 block is taller, the heads are further apart, so the lower inlet manifold is different.

Phoned a local-ish guy who has numerous v8 ford engines on vaarious states of buggeredness, so I am going to try salvage a few parts.
But still waiting for my mate to find out what his engine is, also just found out that the engine was shipped in from the states brand new for £1900 including tax's
