RV8 vernier instructions

I’m in the process of installing a 885 camshaft in my TVR Griff 500 V8 and really struggling to make any sense of how to time the vernier pulley. I’ve been using some instructions from V8 D but can’t seem to get any where near the readings I should have!!
Does anyone have an idiots guide into how to set it up correct?

That's quite a complex subject. I am assuming you have a decent dial gauge, a degree wheel, a pointer and the amount to dial it into?

if so, what are you doing? or why can you not get it right?
