Front crank oil seal.

Front crank oil seal.
Need to replace the one on my 3.5 EFI engine. Do they vary in quality? I'd rather pay more for one with a decent life - if so, where from? The current one came as part of a gasket set, and doesn't seem to have lasted well.

Re: Front crank oil seal.
no part numbers on the current one ?
Or just measure its dimensions and order ( dims will also usually be on the seal itself )

Get a Land Rover Genuine Parts one.

Re: Front crank oil seal.
Why ? Land rover don't make oil seals (or lots of other bits ) they just get them off someone else ,stick it in a land rover bag and quadruple the price. Have a look at Rimmer's genuine landy parts prices compared to the aftermarket part (which may well come from the same place)

Re: Front crank oil seal.
If you can get the same part for less, then definitely get it, and indeed Rimmers are good for helping with that. But buying something that is 'same size, same material, so must be OK', is more risky. If you don't mind changing it a few times, then go for it.
But for a job that is a pain in the arse, I always fit genuine parts, because I value my time.

Re: Front crank oil seal.
Generic parts would be quite fine for an oil seal.
But as above....OEM parts are usually good quality, and when it's not a quick job to replace....it can make sense to ensure quality and correct parts are used.

I do know where your comming from , and for sure Landover are not going to endorse any crap quality part so there is some security in buying OEM parts.
The seal from the gasket set may be a single lip seal, if you were to take the duff seal to the bearing supplier and ask for a double lip seal the same size .....gotta be better ? There is no point in fitting a seal to a (wear) grooved shaft if the lip runs in the groove. I have previously ground a mm off the back of a seal so it seats in further and thusly misses the groove. I have noticed same sized seals from different manufacturers to vary slightly in the lip tension. I have a Guzzi that resisted a few attempts to stop the diff leaking and eventually the bearing shop guy suggested a specific maker who he reckoned made "tight" seals .....bloody thing hasn't leaked since

Re: Front crank oil seal.
TBH, I dont think I've really seen an influx of cheap shite seals, so any reputable source of a suitable product should be quite fine, and good chance identical to the OEM part.
Seals are a fairly generic part, with only a small few variations. As you mention, double or single lip, and some rotation. As well as obvious material and dimensions.
I try and get viton were possible

Re: Front crank oil seal.
I ended up with Corteco - made in Germany. Twin lips and directional. Not fitted yet as I haven't found the spare unworn pulley body I bought ages ago.

Re: Front crank oil seal.
You make a good point about there being no point in replacing the seal if it's running in a groove on the shaft! Lots of people make that mistake and blame the seal. Land Rover hub seals being a classic case.Mc Tool wrote: ↑Fri Oct 04, 2019 12:46 pmI do know where your comming from , and for sure Landover are not going to endorse any crap quality part so there is some security in buying OEM parts.

Re: Front crank oil seal.
And you have to wonder sometimes ,wankin on about critical dimensions ....so how come a 25mm shaft has an oil seal made to work reliably on a 25mm shaft, untill said shaft gets the afore mentioned wear groove and then ( in this instance a maytag washing machine gearbox top ) we bash on an interference fit Speedo sleeve and we now have a 26mm shaft with the same seal stretched over it,.......and it lasts longer than the original

Re: Front crank oil seal.
You can now get this sleeves for such repairs.
I havent used one myself, but have heard them mentioned, and of course yes the seals will cover a small range of diameters for the actual seal itself.

Speedi Sleeves are great. We use them on some of the helicopters I work on.stevieturbo wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2019 9:42 amYou can now get this sleeves for such repairs.

Re: Front crank oil seal.
I've searched for my spare pulley without success. So the sleeve idea looks the way forward, since it looks easy to fit. Anyone got a part number or size or whatever, and where to buy retail? Engine is a RV8 3.5 EFI in an SD1.
