Hi, I'm Colin from South West Wales, I'm a 50 year old Sales Manager (ex-mechanic). Recently bought a TR7 convertible which will be getting a 3.9 V8 out of a Discovery.
Does anyone know how I can find the year of the engine? Engine number is 36D01493A....

According to this:

your engine is 1988 or after.
It's a very low engine number, so I would think 1988 or 1989.
