On your gaskets it looks like the sealing rings got fitted to the outer head bolts and not the oil ways ! most odd.

Chris.
The Elring gaskets do

Then again the entire gasket is far better quality - you get what you pay for ( sometimes)

That looks like a gasket for larger capacity than 3500,they dont seem to list one like that in the bore size i need.
Nearest I can find is 916.066 (10 bolt, not 14) from Elring, does not look like it has sealant around the oil feed hole in the gasket though.

The torque wrench used, when was it last calibrated ??? Should be less then a year.
Even the one borrowed from a local garage should be calibrated every year.

New ones come with a calibration sheet also. Cheap ones without that sheet shouldnt'be bothered.

Have had cheap torque wrenches 30-50lb out of reach up and down.

I dont understand why there are inserts in just he outer row of bolt holes ?

I've used Elrings for years and think they are great. I can get them to leak, but only when I go silly on the power setup. And then they only leak when I've half metlted the block :)

I had this happen with mine, both heads leaked oil through the gasket, then down the block from the head faces, couldn't find the exact answer when I took my heads off, but I followed all the same precautions as everyone else.

and my gaskets where elrings.......

One thing to watch though is make sure your location dowels are not that high that they foul the heads, as I had to drill mine a little deeper due to the heads being heavily skimmed....

Just something else to watch out for.

I've had my block top hatted and decked now, I've had the block deck & head faces checked for flatness at work on a CMM to make sure both faces are good before it goes back together, then its cometic gaskets next for mine.

Cometic MLS gaskets are also great. I fitted a set to my last 4.6 build and then when I rebuilt the latest RV8 I went back to Comp gaskets. We put the Cometics on Jays Escort RV8 and blew the crap out of 3 or 4 engines and re used the Cometics 5 times with no leaks before we ritred the Escort last year.

When I fit comp gaskets to my Rover race engines I always used Copper head gasket spray adhesive. This glues the buggers on good and proper for racing ;)
