Genuine LR Thermostat Gasket

Post by RoverP6B »

I purchased a new QH thermostat and gasket today from my local Land/Range Rover service centre. The thermostat has no jiggle pin nor hole, rather it features an air bleed notch which from my understanding works in the same way as the others...to ensure that air does not get trapped behind the stat.

The gasket is a genuine Land Rover item,..a black rubberised material, concave on one side, raised around the centre on the other side. It is quite stiff and appears to be metal inside with the rubberised coating over the top. Looks quite fancy I must say.

My question is,...does it require any form of gasket cement or do I fit it as it is? I imagine that it will flatten once I tighten the bolts and the rubberised finish which is quite grippy to touch will form the seal. Still,...I like to be sure though... :?

Thanks in advance,
Ron.

I've just done the same to my SD1.

The first gasket of this type I got from Land Rover specialist had a bolt hole missing. The second one overlapped ports in two places.

Eventually purchased a genuine one from a main dealer.

I used Hylomar round the coolant ports as per my WS manual - but like you wasn't sure if this was needed. But decided it could do no harm.

Well I fitted the gasket as is without any cement of any kind. Perfect, does not leak a drop.. :D

Oh Dave,..I expect yours was the inlet manifold gasket,..mine was just for the thermostat.

Indeed. Talk about thinking I'd read something that wasn't there. ;-) But I'd guess they are of the same materials, by your description.
