RV8 water pump pulley

Post by 350matt »

Does anyone know where I can get a bigger diameter water pump pulley for a RV8?

Mine is currently the std pre-serp / SD1 one
is the P6 item any bigger?

'P6 one will not fit without the correct pump'

And if you get the correct pump, then it won't line up with your alternator and crank pulleys.

There are so many different pulley arrangements that suit the numerous configurations of ancillary and vehicle installations, that the chances of finding one to do exactly what you require are slim. Best bet is to get a local machine shop to turn you one up to suit out of aluminium - it will look much better too.

I did my own - not too tricky really.

A bigger pulley in relation to the crank pulley will turn more slowly than the existing one, so the water pump won't run as fast and you pick up power at higher revs

Is this going in a race car with a recently cleaned out block? just from my understanding the water flow through the rover is on the marginal side as it is :? and unless you are spending most of your time at proportionatly higher revs with no risk of a traffic jam you may have problems.

Should be fine as many people use the P6 gearing without problems. The Rover engine doesn't have inherent cooling problems. What it does have is lots of people putting them in cars and not thinking properly about how they are going to cool it. The old I used this radiator because it worked fine in my M8's fiesta!! 4x4 are geared so fast because they tend to spend a lot of time at slow speeds/revs but high loads.

Yeah ok. It would be running slower and couldnt see what advantages that would have, but now you explained it.

Thinking about it, if u had a bigger pulley it would hit the crank pulley !!
So thats where it went !

that gap doesn't sound right, that sounds like you are using a 4x4 cover and not a 2wd one.

Aye, there's about that distance on my engine with a rangey timing cover and pump. If it's a p-shaped water pump and it sticks up to about the middle of the dizzy height then it's a rangey pump and in which case a smaller diameter.
I have a spare timing case and pump (2wd type) if you'd like. It's got a much bigger pulley than mine.
