Get a copy of the IVA manual

It is in plain English

For example if you are looking where to fit indicators and tail lights - look up the section and everything is explained. Go outside these requirements and expect your car will be failed.

Likewise it confirms what is required for emissions, tyres, brakes, fuel systems etc.

That sad - a lot of it is bollocks IMHO it should be purely around safety and the suitability of the car to be driven on the roads - you could have a right heap of poop with everything correctly mounted as per IVA and it has to pass. - the fact that it is a cut and shut that is lethal will not come into it!

There is nothing wrong with the IVA test in principal but it should only look at parts of the car that have been modified and judge just those modifications.

If you could fit a v8 LS motor to a Morris MInor without cutting the monocoque and without upgrading the brakes and suspension to cope then you would retain enough original points from the Minor not to have the car tested. With all that power and the original crap brakes and suspension the car would most likely be lethal, but hey, you could legally take it on the road.

Fit a V8 LS motor to a Morris Minor and uprate the brakes and suspension etc to cope with the power and you've now lost enough points to have to present the car for an IVA.

Just doesn't make sense does it.

I could not agree more!
At SVA I know my chrome fuel filter started weeping and dripping fuel - not picked up as a fail point.
Also a brand new brake light pressure switch let go and leaked brake fluid on the stomp test - because the reservoir had not lost enough fluid for the idiot light to come on - it again passed muster.

In my opinion neither of these should have passed and the examiner should be strung up by his bollocks in public for missing these.

Both were fixed and working for the retest - along with other problems that became aparant on the drive home!
