Smallblock Ford into '93 range rover

Post by FIXR7 »

Hello everyone,

Just joined up and was wondering if anyone has done such a conversion?
I want to use an EFI 351w and adapt it to the ZFHP22.
I've done much searching and can't seem to find any such adaptor/bellhousing.

Cheers!

Hi
I can't see it being that tricky, but you might want to consider a ford 302/gearbox combination that already exists and conver the tail cone/ output shaft arrangment to fit the RR transfer box (like Elliot has done with his SBC into his Dackar http://www.mez.co.uk/gearboxfaq.html just think you may find it cheeper and simpler.
Best regards

is it overfinch who did the small chevy into RR? not very common but if the chevy will go I'm sure there will be nothing in this world or the next to stop a SBF going in!!!
don't nibble on the barrel, pull the trigger!

I thought that Ford had used that transmission, but I can't find any mention of it on the Wikipedia pages for ZF4HP22 or ZF4HP24, which is a pity as it might have meant that there was a standard bellhousing.

Thanks Lads,

I could use an AODE/4R70W and adapt to the BW transfer(or use another Ford/BW transfer) but I was trying to keep the ZF in place. I'm led to believe the ZF can be built rather tough?

Overfinch certainly did a SBC but used a T400.

Here in Australia they use the ZFHP26 6spd auto behind our modular 5.4's in the Falcon but of course this is very different trans with its ECU built into the valve body ie; not condusive to swapping into another vehicle because it requires torque data from the PCM.

The 4HP22 can be upgraded to a 4HP24 which is a shade longer, but otherwise the same externally. It's the 4HP24 that is fitted to 4.6litre Range Rovers and the 4HP22 to all lesser variants.

Hi Chris,

You'd also need a trans ECU and harness to do this. Can you use HP24 parts inside the 22? That would be a good way to beef it up without going for the electronic control of the 24.

I'm pretty sure you can use the 4HP24 parts to beef up the 4HP22 and retain the non-electronic aspect.

Ashcroft Transmissions do such a think I believe.

Thanks Chris,

Ah well I picked up the rangie today, test drove it and all was good.
Drove it 450k's home and the transfer is stuffed!? Looks like I'll have to do that first now.
