Generator

Post by ihatesissycars »

I never got round to getting one last time i asked so here goes again.

What genny do i need that can power my welder?

http://www.v-8.org.uk/snitzforum/topic. ... =generator

Thats the thread i started on the old forum.

Will the 3.5kva genny easily power a welder or is it a bit girly etc? Will my welds be pathetic?

What power capabilities are needed to power simple hand tools like grinders etc?

Anyone got one for sale?

3.5kVA will supply approx 14A at 240V. My guess is that your welder is designed to plug into a standard 13A socket, if so your generator will be powerfull enough.
Rule of thumb is that for every kVA or kW there is 4A for a UK mains voltage. On your welder there will be a spec plate which will give the input eletrical requirements e.g 240V xA or possibly 240V xxxW or similar (x is a number by the way). The amp rating or Watt rating specifies the load on the supply.
The current you specified, 100A, is output current and doesn't relate to the welders supply need.

Doesn't apply to welders but some compressors 'spike' when switched on, mine is supposed to run on a 13A supply / 15A plug but spikes much higher, needs at least a 30A supply to cope.
