Malta drag racing

Post by stevieturbo »

If you are into old Fords, and drag racing, get over to Malta for one of their race meets.

Bloody Mk1 Escorts everywhere on that island, and some incredibly fast race cars. there was a 1500cc n/a pinto running 10.08 secs !!!! ( slicks/race car tho )
Turbo'd 1500cc, cossie power etc etc
Cars wheeling off the line, and some crazy rpm's used. All with open pipes, and sounding pretty damn good.

Top cars were Cossie powered Mk1 dragsters which ran low 8's at crazy speeds. they have done low 7's at 180mph !!!!

Seen a mk3 Cortina, "crafted" from aluminium, and generally a shitload of old fords. Most of the standard of work was excellent.
Nice Mk1 Capri, with Rover V8 power doing some incredible times ( 9's I think ) and superbly built......well, a big cage with Capri parts wrapped around it lol

There are also Mk1 Escorts everywhere on the island, a few Mk2 Cortinas ( some diesel lol ), the odd Mk1 Capri, loads of Morris Ital's and Marinas, as well as modern cars too.
Surprising about the Mk1 Escorts though, they obviously love them there !!!
Busy island, with people and cars everywhere, but their raacing scene is excellent.
It wasa race venue I was at, so it would be interesting to see what normal RWYB days are like. They can get access to the track whenever they want for testing too !!!!

A couple of cool Diesel trucks too. Big straihgt 6 cylinders, 2 turbos running sequentially ( massive boost ) and the fastest ran 11.09, the fastest truck in Europe !!
Even a few diesel car dragsters. A 1600cc Mk1 Escort, A toyota powered Hillman Imp, as well as a few others. Going pretty damn fast too !!
Dont have pics of everything, as I was operating teh video camera, not the still cam, but here's a few.

My boss is from Malta, just bought himself a mark 2 Zephyr, plans to drop a V8 into it some time. The strange thing is that Malta has the second most expensive cars in europe, with massive import duties on new cars and new registrations of kit cars or new build cars. He wanted to build a Cobra, but found out he'd been paying something like 8000 quid registration fee because of the big V8 he wanted. Unless somebody else knows a way round it.....
