A guy on another forum is planning a trip to the UK where he wants to buy a motorcycle to ride down to Spain.
H e was asking if it was possible to....
a. Insure the bike as a non-citizen/resident
b. Travel to EU with that insurance
c. A rough idea of costs
Can anyone recommend Insurance companies that he can approach for quotes, please?
Insurance question for foreigners....

Would his insurance not need to be based in his country of origin and his home address ? Although buying a bike that isnt registered there...complicated.
No idea what insurance is like in Spain...but it sure isnt easy or cheap here in UK !

He has family in UK, so a local address is not a problem.stevieturbo wrote: ↑Wed Feb 07, 2018 2:53 pmWould his insurance not need to be based in his country of origin and his home address ? Although buying a bike that isnt registered there...complicated.

Buying the bike is a simple transaction, he may struggle to get it registered in his name, though.
I don't know who his SA insurer is, but some will not cover out of country.
Cheers,
John

Because of EU law, do all policies not have to cover travel within the EU regardless ?

Yes, but 3rd party only (minimum requirement).stevieturbo wrote: ↑Fri Feb 09, 2018 11:06 pmBecause of EU law, do all policies not have to cover travel within the EU regardless ?
How about driving to UK with a trailer, buying the bike and driving back? No need to register in UK either.
Richard.

He got a quote for what he wanted to do for just over 1000 GBP, so he hunted around a bit and found a rental BMW with panniers and breakdown support with fully comp insurance for small change more than that and took it.
Cheers,
John
