Hi guys
Im off to santapod in a few weeks and im running my sierra v8. Im new to this and was just looking at my slicks I have in the shed and they are Dunlop 235/610/r17 and i was told this was the biggest size i could get on the car without modification. (they came with car)
I have done a little research on the net and it says its better to run a smaller rim and a larger tyre wall. If I was to purchase a 15" rim and tyre with a larger wall would this make a great difference on my times?
also where do i go for good drag tyres?
any advice appreciated..
Thanks Steve

Those look like circuit slicks. They should grip, but the side walls are stiffer than drag slicks so more prone to breaking loose off the line or tramping on the launch. But you can overcome some of this by using grip tyre softener and dropping tyre pressures. If you have some 15" rims that are 8" wide you could fit some Mickey Thompson Drag Slicks which would be 24.5" diameter x 8" wide x 15" rim? Slicks with bigger sidewalls can be fitted to a range of rim widths. If the slick is say 8", you can get away with fitting them to rimes 1" either side of the width of the slick. So for an 8" slick you could fit them on 7" 8" and 9" rims. Just be wary of the amount of space you have for the width of the tyre wall on slicks like these. They do ballon out a bit when inflated and can run on bodywork.
You should budget for £200 per tyre by the time you get them delivered. I get mine from Hauser Race Cars near Northampton. But I am hearing good things about Northant tyres in Hampshire so i will be talking to them about next years slicks.
I'm at the Pod for the saturday night specail on 19th October and maybe the 27th october as well. What event are you attending??

Steve
Thats good news Steve
I'm being pushed to work on the 27th But I'm trying to get out of it. I would like to run the MGB on the very last RWYB this year if I can. The last RWYB I can attend any year is the day I try something radical with the engine tune to see if it will go faster or break??

And without knowing what compound and usage those slicks are....they could be a stinking pile of turd for drag use.
If you wanted some decent drag radials in 17" at a sensible price....try this guy
He has four, but hasnt had any takers on them. They'd be a safer bet than most circuit slicks unless you knew the slicks were a very soft compound.

As for the whole diameter debate, yes a smaller rim with large sidewall tyre will help traction off the line.
But are you at the stage where traction is a major issue using sensible tyres ?
What is the car, power, setup etc ? What sort of times do you run, and what sort of 60fts can your drivetrain handle ?
As for new drag tyres £££££££££££
Hauser Racing
Andy Robinson Race Cars
Webster Engineering
Lee at LA Racing
Jurgen at JM Imports is maybe another
Hoosier UK
New tyres as they are all sourced from the US are not cheap.
